(By Telograpli.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, March 14. In the Magistrate's Court to-day Matthew Adams was fined '405., and costs for rescuing cattle from the borough ranger, i'or assisting iu the rescue, Frederick C. Matthews was fined 20s. and costs.

Tho friends of Mr. aiuUMrs. Donald M ! l J hec of Gladstone, will regret to hear that their eleven-year-old son lan York died in a private hospital in Masterton yesterday after undergoing an operation for appendicitis. ,

A case of, interest to owners of tractionengines was heard in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. The owners of tho Tinui coach (Messrs. Scott and Jones) claimed ..£l7 from Isaac Allen for damages done to the coach through the horses having been frightened by defendant's traction engine. The magistrate held that the defendant had been guilty of negligence, through not leaving men on the look-out, and awarded the plaintiff J!l3 4s. damages, with M Bs. costs. 1 \. David Plett and Henry J. Jones were each fined ss. and costs in the Magistrates', Court to-day for failing ;to attend drill, as required by- the Defence Act. Ono of the defendants pleaded that he had,been harvesting, and could not come'; and the other stated that He worked from six o'clock in the morning until six at night. • '

Six settlers and dealers were fined in sums of 10s.-and costs in the Magistrate's Court to-day for exposing for sale sheep infected with lice. ' '

A meeting of .retail tradesmen is to be held on Tuesday evening next, to consider the half-holiday ,- question. It is probable that steps will be taken to form a Citizens' League.. , _ ' . Mr. Alex. Murray has disposed of his property' at Waterfalls to Mr. A., H. Herbert, of Eketahuna. It is reported that Mr. Murray intends leaving the distript. Another vacancy will, m consequence, be created on the Masterton (Jbunty Council. A communication from the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce was read at the meeting of tho Masterton County Council on' Wednesday, asking for support in a protest to tho Minister for Eaihvays against the connection of the Sandon train line with tho Main Trunk railway. The Masterton County Council took 110 action, as it considered it was not interested in the matter. . His Honour Mr. Justice Chapman will preside at the circuit sitting of the Supremo Court, which opens here on Monday next.

The Masterton Technical School has commenced this year's work under particularly encouraging conditions. Nearly the whole of the classes have filled well, and much enthusiasm as. being displayed by director, teachers,, and students. An etfort is being made to form a veterinary class for farmers' sons, and the Farmers' Union and A. and P. Association are being appealed to for support. The scarcity of labour is etill being felt in this district, and several contracts for road-metalling are 'going begging. The children of tlio Masterton District High School are sWtly to be medically examined by Dr. Elizabeth Gunn. A number of Masterton tradespeople intend observing Easter Saturday as a close holiday, and an. effort is being made to induce the whole of the tradesmen to close on that.da;-. ... y...
