SWIMMING.

—< —$ fßr "Splash."]

THE LYALL BAY.GALA. Tho first function in connection, with the Citizens' Easter Carnival is the swimming gala at Lyall Bay this afternoon. Tho alfair is being carried out, by the members of tho swimming clubs (including, tho Karanui and Lyall Bay Snrf Clubs). Tho paramount object of tho gala is to raise funds in order to supplement the carnival exchequer's funds. Perhaps the best comic item for this afternoon will be a burlesque on the landing of Captain Cook, and his reception by the Maoris. ' Mr. G. P. Hanna is'responsible for the idea, which appears to nave captured tho support of many swimmers, who have expressed a desire to take part in tho event. Of course, tho success of this event will depend entirely upon tho enthusiasm of the participants, who, it is hoped, will do their best. Other events on tho programme will include exhibitions of life-saving and competitions for tho same, reel rescue, relay race (four a team) of 100 yds. each. There will be a "horse race," and also the inevitable "bookies." Besides other items, there will be various side-shows, and afternoon tea will bo dispensed. Since no one can order weather, wo will have to hope for tho best.. Polo Championship. Old Boys have every reason, to be pleased with themselves in winning the polo banner, having come through tho season without losing an event. Tho following table shows the details of the season's matches:— Team P. W. L. D. Pts.

Tepid Baths. The plea for tepid batlis in Woilington appears-to be setting stronger, ami whenever opportunity affords itself. s are not slow to give vent to their feelings. Tepid baths are most desirable, and it seems a pity Hint thcro nro not any in Wellington. A delegate at a meeting of the Wellington Centre held recently, said; that it had come under his notice that' out of GOO children attending the Brooklyn School, less than 2 per cent, could swim. He understood that tho residents are about to approach the City Council on the matter, and ask them to build one at Brooklyn. There is no doubt that it is needed. However, a deptuatiou of Wellington swimmers is to wait on tho City Council after the Easier holidays, ami place their views before the councillors.
