CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES. ' Tennis players are now contemplating entering for the Wellington championship tournament to bo held at Palmerston North during Easter. Even though none, • of the present holders be defending their" titles'to the various events, if the weather be favourable, the meeting should nevertheless be an interesting one. A junior fixture was played against • members of the Petone Tennis Club on Saturday last by a team from the Petone . Wesley Tennis Club, on the _ formers courts.- Wesley Club-won by a narrow margin, of points. The most evenly contested ,games were:- Udy v. Duncan, and Thompson v. Marsden,,-both matches boing keenly fought out. The , detailed 'scores were as follow:— • - • • . ■Men's Singles—Udy (Wesley) beat Duncan (Petone), 9—7; Thompson (Petone) beat Marsden (Wesley), 9—7. Men's:Doubles—Duncan and Thompson (Petone) beat Udy and Marsden, 6—1.. Ladies' Doubles—Misses Lewis and Web-, ster, (Wesley) beat Misses Naughton • and Arrowsmith, 9—3. • Combined Doubles—Miss Naughton.and Thompson (Petone) beat Miss Webster and Udy,' 9—7 ; Miss Lewis and. Marsden (Wesley) beat JEss Arrowsmith and Duncan, 9—3. ' ■ The members of the Petone and Hutt Tennis Clubs played a series of game 3 on Saturday last, resulting in a win for the latter club by 9 sets ,to 4. The scores were as follow:— Men's Singles—Jackson (Hutt) beat Curtis (Petone), 9—2; P. Brown (Hutt) beat' Austin (Petone), 9—7; Lower (Hutt) beat Parkinson (Petone), 9—3; Treadwell.(Hutt) beat Hope (Petone), 9—3. . Ladies' Singles—Miss C. Stevens (Hutt) beat Miss Bennett- (Pfitone),- 7—3; Mrs. Wagg (Hutt) beat Miss Caverhill (Petone), 7—ii. '.; - Men's Doubles.—Jackson and Power (Hutt)'beat Curtis and Austin (petone), 9—s;*. Poananga and Clere (Hutt) beat Baker'and Wji'kinson (Petone), 9—o; Parkinson and. Hope (Petone) beat Treadwell and Brown (Hutt), 9—5. Ladies' Doubles—Misses Ste-. vens;(Hutt) beat Misses Bennett and.Udv (Petone),'^7—i f Misses -Caverhill';and Wat, ; ters (Petdne),',be¥t-irre..''.Wag'g, , and"Miss' Speedy (Hutt), 7—3. _. , ■ Combined Doubles —Miss Walters* and Baker (Petone) heat Miss F._ Stevens and Poananga. (Hutt), 7—5; Miss Udv and Wilkinson (Petone) beat Miss Speedy and Clere (Hutt), 7-G. ' In the men's singles the Hutt representatives had it mostly all their own way, Jackson playing in his best style,.disposed of Curtis with case, though the latter player is a most 'promising one. Austin made the best stand for Petone and was-only defeated by two' games. Treadwell and Brown were ,the onlv pair on tl)e Petone side to win their doubles. Miss C. Stevens." who secuml the championship or the Hutt this' yeaV, defeated Miss Bennett with ease,-while Mrs. Waggs who invariably plays with good judgment and remarkable steadiness, had :» good win from Miss Caverhill. Mrs. Wagg's placing is a feature in itself. , It; is disanpointing to think that these two clubs did not compete in the inter- . club matchfes this season as they conld each piit a fairly strong team' in the field, more especially in the ladies' grade. When they did compete , they were always enthusiastic and had their fair measure of success. Let us, hope that next ' year they will once more bo seen in' the arena. , file Brougham Hill Club championships: haVe moved on a few more, rounds and' tho men's doubles have been won by the Howe Bros., who defeated' Edwards and Veen in the final. The match was a complete "walk-over" for the former, as Edwards and. Veen wf>re . quite:-" demoralised, possibly by the fact that they wero playing the "invincibles." 1 An interesting match, which is down J for play; will be between Laishley and Reeves. If the latter shows-the style lie has been displaying of late the ,game should be "of great interest. In: tho ladies' singles ,Mrs. Earle disposed of Miss E. Steven's (G—3. G—l) in a most decisive fashion. After the lattcr's defeat of Mrs. J. A. B. Howe it waj. thought-she would come (Sut a"winner, but Mrs. Earle was too strong for her opponent. Sho has a great variety of shots and her driving and placing-were excellent. The match between Misses .Davis and T.. Stevens was a disappointing affair, neither player showingi her best form. Miss .Davis had an easy win, the score being, G—2, G—l. Miss Davis now meets Miss Yarral!, and as sho is certain to be victorious she will meet Mrs. : Earle in the final, when she will no doubt be fullv extended in. order to retain the club honours. The following are the results, of the championship and handicap matches recently played at the Wellington Club, Courts:— Men's Single (championship)—Kirkcaldic defeated Clinkard, G—2, G—3; Boddington defeated Grady, G-r3, 5—G, H. Rout defeated Crombie, 5—G, G—2; .6—l. Men's Doubles (handicap)—Clinkafd and Madden (35) defeated Williams and Coad (40), 70—GS. Combined (handicap)— Brown and Miss Travers (owe 25) defespd Ward and Mrs. Fernie (owe 20), G0—32." Ladies'"Singles—First round: Miss Van Staveren defeated Miss Kirker, 6—0,'6—1; Mrs. Fflrnie defeated Miss Francis. 6—l. G—2. Second round:. Miss Cock defeated Miss Webb. G—o, G—3. "Ladies' Doubles.—Miss Van . Staveren and Mrs. Grady (5) defeated Misses Francis and Kirker (28). Gl—s9. , Misses AVebb and Gray (25) defeatedMisses Muir and L. Veitch (35), ; In . tho last-m»ntiored event Miss, Van Staveren and Mrs. Gradv will play off the final with Misses Webb and Gray, and if the former pair show anything like their true form they should have an easy ■ victory. • s Brown and Miss Travers had it all their own way in defeating Wanr and Mrs./ Fernie, and from the result it certainly looks as if the latter pair had not been •liberally enough treated in tha matter of handicaps. Brown and Miss Travers (owe 25) nlay off Ihe final with Crombie and Wiss TTindmarsh, and will no doubt carry off the event.
