NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bt Glencoe.]

Tlio nominations received for the Wellington Racing Club's nicotine exceed last year's total by over 80. Auckland horses linvo not been freely ontcred, and the name of the Southland champion, Soldier's Chorus, is missing, but the best representatives from all other centrcs are nominated. ' W. Price, A. Oliver, and W. Bell are leaving by motor-car to-morrow to fulfil riding engagements at the Opunako meeting, which, takes place on Monday next. It was the intention of Emerson to attend the meeting, but ho received instructions ,to go south at once to ride tlife Chokcbore horses in their work for tho C.J.C. Easter meeting. B. Deeley, the hero of the Nelson meeting, was in Wellington yesterday conferring with R. J. Mason, who left for Sydney by the outgoing steamer to attend the yearling sales, which open next Tuesday week. Later in the Dceley went south to ride Mr. G. D. .Greenwood's horses at tho Riccarton meeting. His mounts in tho Easter and Autumn Handicaps will lie Emperador and Sir Solo. The Nelson Cup meeting was highly successful in every way, and a returned visitor, who was present, predicts that there will be a profit of .£SOO over the 'fixture. This will enable the club to considerably augment the stakes next year., Waipunui, a winner at Nelson on Thursday, is to race on . tho West Coast at Easier. There was some, argument after the black gelding scored- in the Farewell Handicap, and a Picton bonifaco requested the stewards to impound the stake, alleging that he had purchased the animal at the auction sale earlier in the afternoon. It is unlikely that any more will be heard of the matter.

Commotion, winne/ of both Welters at Nelson, is a big bay gelding that should make an ideal jumper later on. He is a member of B. Keeper's team at Blenheim,' and lias proved a wonderfully consistent horse, having started in five races and won each time.

Messrs. 11. Cranny and W. M'Dougall, who loft for' Sydney last night after a holiday in New Zealand, reported having had a pleasant time during the last few weeks. Both • speak very highly of the way in which New Zealand sportsmen in different parts helped to make their trip an cnjoable one.

Sir Edgar Vincent, chairman of the Empire Trade Commission, has .been a liberal supporter of the turf in the Old Country, and generally kept a few eood horses in training at Newmarket. He it was who purchased Multiform from the late Mr. G. G. Stead, and subsequently exchanged, that horse for Screw Gun. It has been proposed that the AVellington Baring Club and tho Mnnawatu Bacing Club should exchange dates for the Autilmn meeting, so .that the Tr&itham races might be held while the New Zealand' battleship is in port. The fixture would then take place on April 10 and 12, and tho officers and crew of tho battleship would be entertained by the racing club, who intend, if possible, to secure a number of horses and provide a race for bluejackets. In the event of the alteration being made, the Government offices will bo closed on Thursday, April 10, and it is suggested that a publio holiday should be proclaiinwl in order to make the race meeting a special feature of tho carnival. The Mayor has been approached on the matter, but has not yet given an answor. If the city authorities consent to tho holiday, tho racing club might be induced to give a substantial donation to the carnival fund, and the carnival and (lie oity generally would probably benefit thereby.
