Several other vc6sols leaving port at the feame time had to put 1 back, hut the Warrimoo, although compelled to slow down for some hours, camo on. For those on board the passago was most unpleasant, the gale keeping up all through Saturday night and Sunday, but on Monday somewhat better conditions were experienced. Moderate weather conditions, were experienced from Monday until arriybl. No damage is reported aa having boon done. POSITION OF UNDERWRITERS. Tho Institute of London Underwriters has been making efforts to bring the marine underwriting business Into a more favourable position. Last year was one of disaster, the best, and apparently safest, risks turning out unsatisfactorily. Tho "Economist," under date of London, January 25, draws attention to tho trend of underwriting business towards schedule tariffs and policies. The standardisation of the clauses of tho marine policies is becoming pronounced, and as schedule rates are well adhered to as regards- Australian marine risks, it is the fact that some variation ist taking place in tho clauses that is of particular interest, The "Economist" points out that it is worth whilo examining new clauses carefully, and that a claim may not be recoveraile under the new clauses. . An illustration is given in the recent case of the Narrung, which met with such heavy weather that she was forced to put back to London and discharge her cargo, some of which was damaged with sea water. In ;tho' f.p.a.clauscs most commonly used hitherto an assured cam claim for particular average if the ship or vessel put into a port of refuge and discharge, but by the institute clauses the only damage for which he can claim i-s damage done in discharging cargo, 1.e., the f.p.a. clause is broken only to far as concerns goods which -arc actually mishandled. The movement towards tariffs and standard wordings is, the "Econouiist" states, certainly growing, and may result in a very much higher level of rates than merchants have been lu'cnarcd to pay in tlio past. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain M. A. Davey signed off the ICoromiko at Wellington yesterday. Oapt-aiii J. nolms flHs tho vacancy. Mr. W. W.
