TOWED TO POET CHALMERS. \ ■ • (By Telegraph.—Prera Association.) Duncdin, March 13.. Salvage operations t on the Kowhai, Which was badly damaged aWlie Heads yesterday morning, were continued throughout last night. Suction dredge 101 was got ready a" soon as possible, the powerful salvage pumps Tecontly imported for the liew tug being fitted on her. She then groped her way through the darkness to the Kowhai,. and pumping operations started a little later. Tho pump, which has a lift capacity, of about 18,000 tons per hour, steadily gained on tho water, but as "water was still freely rushing into the vessel operations were suspended to permit a diver to go down and block the opening more effectively. The Kowhai was resting on sand, the diver, had practically to burrow his way, under her, br.t ho managed to place a large pad over the gash, which,was about three feet long and.about half that width. Pumping was resumed at 3 p.m., when the tide was high, and was completed in half an hour, after which the Kowhai was towed to Port Chalmers and docked. An inquiry .into the mishap will be held by the Collector of Customs to : morrow afternoon.
