CABMEN'S PROTEST.

AGAINST THE NEW SCALE OF I'AItES. . • City cab proprietors held a meeting last evening at which they unanimously decided to form an association, to be called t'ho Wellington Cab» Proprietors' Association. There were al>out 30 present. The main object of the meeting was to discuss the new scale of. fares devised by tho City Council.

Mr. G. Winncott proposed that the old 6calo should remain in force. Since the old scale had been in vogue the cabmen had had much to contend against. The price of horse shoeing had risen, horse feed had risen, so that feed was hardly ever less than per ton, the price of harness had risen, ana they were charged a spscial license fee of lOs.'to ply for. hire at the Munawatu station.

The new scalo proposed that instead of Is. for each extra person, only 6d. should be charged. In District No. 1, the new scale made a maximum of 55., but if only lid. per extra person was to be charged thin 'maximum could , not bo reached. By tho new scale only 3s. as a maximum could be obtained.

It was decided that a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Mason and Baldwin, should wait on the By-Laws Committee of tile council and ask that' the hew scale bo noil put into operation until the cabmen had had time, to consider it. They would tlrtn wait upon tho council and discuss the new as oompared to tho old scalo of fares.
