THE CITY'S MILK.

V ; — — ' MUNICIPAL CONTROL. Tho control of the city milk, supply was discussed at last night's- special meeting of tho City Council, when j Councillor E. Tregear moved: "That, ! in view of tho fatt that half tho sickness' and mortality sof children has its ' source; in' contaminated food, the council take into serious consideration tho question of tho control of the milk supply of the city." The mover put forward arguments in favour of a pure milk supply, and suggested that tho ..council had shirked the I question in the past.

E. Fitzgerald, J. Godber, J. Smith, and L. M'Kenzie, who announced'themselves as supporters of the motion, also objected to tlio statements that tho mover had made. They ' paid tributes to tho work of the past councillors, mentioning particularly ex-Coun-cillor M. Murdoch and Councillor G. Shirtcliffe, the chairman' of the present Health Committee.

Councillor W. H. P. Barber was of opinion that the council had considered the matteT," and while supporting the motion, he hoped that Oounaiilor Tregear would alter it to read that "tho council endeavour to have (the law amended so ns to give the local authorities control of the milk supply. This was agreed to by -tho mover, and seconder, and the motion was amended accordingly. The Mayor, in supporting the motion, recounted the difficulties that had been met with when the Bill to (leal with the matter was introduced in 1!M0, and gave an. indication of the wonc done bv councillors in connection with the matter. After Councillor Tregear had replied, the motion was put to tho meeting, and carried UMnipioaslj.
