A wirelo9S message has been received from the Union Company I '-) Warrimoo stating that the vessel was expected to make port from Sydney at 6 a.m. to-day. one .will berth at tho Queens Wharf on arrival. ESSEX FROM LIVERPOOL. Heavy rain has delayed discharging operations in connection with the F. and S. Line's steamer Essex at Auckland. Consequently the vessel is not cxpcctert to get away from the northern port until Saturday. The Essex is due here with her Liverpool' cargo on Monday. MATATUA FOR LONDON. ,It was expected that tho Shaw-Savill liner Matatua would clear Wellington for London, via Las Paltnas, at 6 a.m. to-day. She is due at her destination on April 24. , CRUISER STERN VESSELS. According to some remarks made in the course of a talk a- reporter had yesterday with Mr. J. B. Allan, of the well-known Dominion Steamship Line, trading between Liverpool and the St. Lawrence, the cruiser stern has at least one feature which is already being adapted by the passenger liner. ' It is claimed, and has in fact, snyp' Mr. Allan, been demonstrated, that what. is known as the "cruiser" Ptorn minimises the vibral tion of a vessel bc*idc.« reducing her tendency to pitch heavily in a. liend eea, while it also increases the roominess of tne vessel in tho stern compartments. Certainly the straight "cruisei*" stern does not odd to the beauty of il ve-isel's outline, but these are utility day?, and the graceful cut-water of the schooner bow had in its time to give place to the more prosnielookinc but practical straight bow. Apparently the only drawback to tho "cruiser" stern is an inclination on the part of the vessel t-o be what sailors term "dirty" in the bows. Tlie first hig .passenger steamers for which the "cruiser stern haa boon ndopted orc the two new 18,C00-ton qundruple turbine boats of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company? ' Empross" fleet on the Pacific Conft. These tine vessels, said Mr. Allan, will probably bo engaged on the Yancoifcver-Japnn run: and for luxury, speed, and general appointment'will establish a new e-tandard on the Pacific Ocean. The Allan Company and tho O.P.R. arc now practically amalgamated, and. to accelerate the through service, two 17,5C0-ton "cruiser" stem quadruple turbine steamers n.rO' being built for the Atlantic service, and will start running probably about Juno next. Die Allan Line, which was the first to run turbine steamers across tho Atlantic, will Uiufl bo the pioneers on the "Herring Pond ' of tho "cruiser" *tcrn. These new Dominion linere—the Alsatian and Calgarion-will have a speed of about 21 knots, and tho new C.P.R. boats will have a speed almost as great. PATIOA lIARIIOUR. PROPOSED PURCHASE OF A TITO. At tho monthly meeting of tho Paten Harbour Hoard on (writes the corrrvponilent of the "Wangnnni Chrnnicle"). the pilot's report was re;id stating fhot there was lift., of witcr at high sprint: tides and about. 7ft. Nt nenp tides. Some discu-Hon ensued ns to where thf> found* ings were taken, it having bren sutrcested that they were taken ot o- point I2Pft. on t.h" r.r.nwnrd i?ido of the vail, nr.'l not all over the bar. The Mited lint tills '.vas incorrect, tho founding havinp benu taken all over the bar, It was finally ro*

solved that the pilot report evcr.r cnee of ' ,oa 't touching when the bar. The question of purchasing a t.ug was' also considered. Letters were read from two of the captains- trading to tho port, supporting tlie proposal, and from throM others against it.
