RUGBY FOOTBALL. ' OLD BOYS' CLUB. "Soma evil genius," stated to have pursued the Old Boys' i\iotball Club last season, gained special mention .in tho report . submitted at the fifteenth annual geueial meeting of members held last night. There was au attendance of about thirty members, Dr. AV. Young presiding. The annual report and the balancesheet were adopted.' Regret was expressed in tlio report tint . tho committee should have had to record tho most disastrous season that it has been the fortune, or rather misfortune, of the club to know. . "We expected to at least start off with a fairly strong .senior team," said the" report, "but some evil genius, which pursued us without meroy throughout the whole of the season, got to work before the first match .was played, with , the'result that two of our best men, Messrs. Pool and Gilbert, were laid aside by accidents, and could not play at all. So it, went on, Saturn«y .after, Saturday, with painful monotony, until at last, when wo were drawn to play, against Petone, we could hardly raiso six of the men that we thought with ordinary luck would see the year out. The result was inevitable.' We had to withdraw frout' the senior Tanks. But one team then remained in tho field; the "Glorious Fourths," who did fairly well, as the following record will • snow:Matches played, 12 j won, G; lost, 0. ; Th» total membership on the roll is—l lite, 50 active,"73 honorary. If • our playing record is not"a satisfactory one, at least our financial position is, seeing that; we have a bank balance of .£17.125. 6d„ and our liabilities are nil. ■ In the disou&aion of tho report, several members deplored tho lack of 'interest evinced in certain quarters. On the motion of Mr. R. Hannah, it was decided to instruct the incoming committee to write , to prominent mdmbcrs, urging them, 1 to evince greater 'interest in' tho club's welfaie. It was decided to donate tlio sum ot £> ss. to the Wellington College ground fund. Six new members were elected. Tho election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. J. P.. M'Konssie presiding. , /Moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (already summarised in ■ H'heDojii.n-ion), Mr. M'Kenzie said that tho meetings last'year had been poorly attended, and th<> active iuembersliip of . the? association was not strong eiiough to. enable it to properly fulfil its obligations to the Wellington Rugby Union.. The association was ini a satisfactory financial position. i Mr. S. Brown (presidertt)'congratulated the association on tho way in which it had carried out its duties during the past year. The Rugby Union should get as many members as possible to act as referees. A percentage of' (he players who dropped out every season should help .. the same by taking on refereeing. HOCKEY. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE. Tho ManaKeroent Committee of tho ' Wellington Hockey Association niefc on Tuesday evening, Mr. C. N. Cathie presiding. Tile. Grounds Committee, it was decided, is to interview the Karori Borough Council's engineer with regard to laying out the grounds at Karori Park. It was resolved to defer tho matter of affiliating with the Amateur Sports Fed- . eration, which is to bo quartered at the * Civil Service Club, until tho annual meeting of delegates. . On-condition that all its matches were played at Miramflr, the Miramar Club wrote stating that it would be prepared to enter one team during next season. It • was decided to inform the club that the
iiieomiiig committee would be the proper body to deal with the matter. It wag dccidcd to arrange a public opening of tlio season at LCnrori Park on the Saturday prior to tins coimucitccnient of tho fixtures, probably April 12. The propamine will includo field ■ events,, in addition to which nn inter-club scven-a-sido tournament will bo held. Kntries for tlio tournament are now being received.
/ The sub-coiumitt-.'o which had been appointed to go into the question of hockey in schools reported that it would bo possible to inaugurate a competition this year, provided tho services of smtablo men could be procured to supervis; matters on Saturday mornings. It was resolved to circularise all the associations affiliated to tlio New Zealand Hockey Association placing before them tile views of tlie Wellington Association respecting the engraving of names on the shield. ' Wellington was of opinion that only tlio name of tho province holding tho shield at tho end of tho season should bo the name placed on it, thus marking tho. real champion province of New Zealand. The proposal that each association' that beat the holders during the various contests in each season should have its name on tho shield was not favoured by Wellington, as it would teiul to lessen tho value of the trophy, and not indicate tho champion team of the year.
