NOTES ON THE RACING. ■ (By Telegraph.—Brecial Correspondent.) Nelson, March 12. Heavy rain fell all day yesterday, and for the greater part of the night, but tho morning broke fine, and the rain held off for the opsning day of the Nelson Jockey Club's "annual race meeting. The track was rather on the "dead" side, and was against- tile top weights. The Nelson Cup nrovpd to be an easy win 'for Csyion, who galloped the field 'to a standstill. There was a. record crowd present, including a large contingent of Marlborough and Wellington visitors. Mr. R: O. Duncan acted as deputy-stipen-diary steward, but beyond admonishing a couplo of riders for not having proper control of their movements, his duties were light. The racing was clean throughout, a good day's spoi'fc was. witnessed, and ft fresh tot'alisator record was established.

There were eight runners in the Trial Hack, and the public seized on Cadonia as the favourite. Cadonia had No. 1 position at ithe barrier, and iumped 011, t well. But she was soon passed by Wailand and Trilby, both of whom left her at the halfmile. Trilby then took charge, and this well-bred mare won, in the liollowest fashion by ten lengths. Siinila just headed Wailand on the. post, while the favourite was one of the last to finish. Idol showed a lot of pace for five furlongs, but hung out badly the whole way. Rhodesia, who hails from the powerful Blenheim stable presided over by M. Maher, was made a good favourite in the two miles and a half -trot, and, after indulging Baron Franz with the lead until the bottom of the straight, A. Hendrikson came out on the favourite, and wgn nicely by a length. Tarawera was a poor third, with the remainder strung out.

Tile Nelson Cup saw Sinapis, with Deeley in the saddle, a good favourite, with tho other trio within a few tickets of each other. The lightly-woigMed Wild Bird made the pace a cracker till tile three-furlong post, when she compounded and Royal Marine took charge. At tin's point the two ton-weights were together a couple, of lengths behind Royal Marine but the favourite was in difficulties, while Ceylon was coming on full of running Taking charge at the distance, the chestnut mare came 011 and won all out br a length, with Sinapis a length further back, and Wild Bird beaten off. Tho heavy state of tho going, combined with her weight, brought about the downfall of the favourite. It is a significant fact however, that tile winner ahvavs does better in S. Reid's hands than'in the hands of anyone else.

There were six starters saddled in the Hopo Hack Handicap, but Alofa broke down in the preliminary, and the stewards allowed her to lie withdrawn. Portlaud Lady was a hot favourite, and she won all the way. Ruapara was her nearest attendant till a furlong from' hoiiic when Awlia, who had been very slow to find his feet, came 011 the scene, and beat the Blenheim horse for second money. Portland Lady has improved a lot as the result of the travelling she has done, and is now a much better mare than she was last season.

When the machine started operations 011 the second trot it looked as if Baron Franz would be favourite, but at the finish that position was held by Lord Thorpe, who was driven by A. Hendriksen. The latter tqok somo time to get • into his gait, but Baron Franz went off well, and soon put a big break on the field. At the half mile he was joined by Lord Thorpe, and the favourite sooii settled the dispute. Heirloom was in third position a long way back.

The Telegraph Hack Handicap-was the best race of 111" day. and resulted in a fine fiilish. Merry Guy was favourite, but lie was ncv.." a winner in running, and finished out of a place. Lady Mildred anil Merry Guy were quickest l'o begin, but Kplue sunn headed (hem. A( Ihc bottom of the course she joined by Panther, Royal .Sleeves took charge nt tho distance, and appeared to be win-

ning comfortably, but she fired badly, <iml the whole field joined in, After a ding-dong finish, Miss Olive, ridden by file Wanganui apprentice, K. Lambess, wore down the lender, ridden -by A. Head. Mount Victoria closed up a slightly better favourite than Miss Sylvia in the Grandstand Handicap. The former seemiml quite unable to act mid finished last, while Hiss Sylvia won after a good race after being badly placed over the first part. The West Coast champion, Irish Gift, had a big break. after five furlongs had been covered, but lie tired to nothing in the long straight. Miss Sylvia, finishing well, beat him pointless,' while Waipunui also came fast from the ruck and got second place. Beacon was close up fourth after running very wide at the home turn. • The concluding event provided another • very fine finish, and incidentally gave Deeley an opportunity of riding hi's third winner. Achilledes (Achilles—Dexterity) was made a good favourite, with Commotion and Awha backed'in that order. The public judged the case well, for the two finished within heads of. each other, and were well'clear of the field. At the start Achilledes led from Terakolie, with Awha iii third position, and Commotion whipping a strung-out field. Terakolie cried enough half-way down the straight, and Awha joined Achillcdcs. Just as the pair were fighting. out (lie finish, Deeley brought his mount (Commotion) along, and, after a great struggle, won by the barest margin. '
