TWENTY-SEVEN ESSAYS DECEIVED. The Mayor (Mr. David M'Laren) ported yestor&iy that lie had received twenty-soven essays on "The Beauties of Wellington," the subject set by Dr. Newman for an essay competition in connection with the Citizens' Carnival. Ample provision has been mado to preserve (lie anonymity of the writers as far as tho judge is concerned. Their names arc enclosed in sealed envelopes, which are not to bo opened until the judge has selected the winners' pen-names. At last evening's meetins of the executive, the appointment of Mr. W. F.-Wnrd as judge was confirmed. Ho will probably do his work as quickly as possible, as it is intended to nso the essays, by way of advertising the attractions of Wellington In view of the Citizens' Carnival at Easter.
