An assault upon Acting-Detective Horn* nlerley, on the inight of Saturday, February 22, led to the appcaranco ill the Police Court, before Mr. Cutteii, S.M., of three young men to answer a, charge of having assaulted a police officer while in tho execution-of his duty. According to' the evidence, the detective received injuries to his face and damage to his clothes'. A crowd gathered round, and he was thrust against the wall and kicked. In defending himself, ho knocked one of his assailants to tho ground, rendering him unconscious. All three were convicted, the magistrate remarking that such rows were getting too frequent in Auckland. Accused, who was' knocked down, had doubtless been punished enough. Ho .would be convicted and prohibited, as drink was the cause of the trouble. The other two would be prohibited, and would havft to come up for sentence when called upon. Costs would also have to Ire paid by th« accused. In the afternoon the Commission visited the grounds of the Mental Hospital at Waitati. The plantations of th? County Council on tho catchment area of the Leith Valley were also inspected.
