TRENTHAM--1913

FINAL OF THE FIFTY. RIFLEMAN JAMES ON TOP. : — ' • ■ 1 OPAKI MAN SECOND. SERVICE MATCH HONOURS. : SANDFORD WINS. ■ Last shots were fired nt "Trenlham, 1913," yesterday, and these resulted in the winning of tho New, Zealand Rille Championship by Rifleman F. I{. James, of Okawa Ril'o Club, by tho comfortable .margin of 6 points. - > This event surprised nobody. Rifleman Jamea'had everything in his.favour. Firstly,'ho, lmd a comfortable lead of 7 points over his nearest competitor, Marenzi, in the King's Fifty; secondly, tho weather was of the gusty; uncertain kind which makes high scoring, eveil by the coolest and 'most practised marksman, exceedingly problematical.: James, therefore, hnv--1 ing 7 points to spare, could reasonably ' rely on the probability that no one—least of all his rival 'Marenzi, a' fickle marksman—would make more than 45 points ; out of a possible 50 with ten shots at 1000 j yards. So ho could speculate on U margin of at least 15 points, and yet win. Loveday, tho third inan'of the Fifty, was 2 points .behind Marenzi and nine behind the leader. ' Shortly all that James had to do was to keep cool, and hit tho target. He opened with an outer (2) for his sighting " "iiiut, elected to discard it, and found the inner with his first "counter"—a promising start.. Mdrenzi, meanwhile, had opened with an outer for his sighter. He followed with/, another "two" for his first "counter/' and did not'fmd. the inner (4) till his third shot- off tho rille. So far as the first three shots were concerned young Lovcday. was the most dan- - serous, for ho hail three inuers to bis credit, tho first of which—his sighter—ho recklessly discarded, hoping no doubt to ,- find the'bull with his first business, shot. It should be' here explained that, in tho King's . Match, a competitor has the option of taking his sighting shot as a counting shot, so long as his 'decision is made as soon as that, shot is signalled. ' To throw away an. inner, ivhieh counts four, was reckless on such an occasion, and Loveday no doubt realised this before ho rose from the .'mound, for his fourth "counter" was a. miss, and his tenth was a miss. His total' was 28, and it placed him tenth .on the list. '. -

To return, to 'James'.: The 'leader of the Fifty followed liis. inner v.-ith ail outer,' and then made two more iimers, two mag- - pics (3 each), an inner and outor, a "bull" and a miss. His match scoro was ' 31.' That is to. say, he was ID points short of the possible score, yefa his 7-point lead in • the .-King's Mfty enabled him to win by 6 points. . : ' . , ' Jtarenzi, <who wanted 39 to Treat him, niutlo. 25, cracking lip rather badly. His actual figures were 24-12350325, and he dropped liack 'to eleventh place on the list. > Williams, of Ohura, who was 20 points bcliind'James when lie wont down to firo his ; filial -ten-shots, and 13 behind Jlar-enzi.ymadsa.niQgnificent-effort, and scored .'ll, which included six "bulls," and shot .-into the 'third place, winning the rille challenge' cup'awarded'-to' thtf top scorer in flic King's Match. '.' •, . Camjron, of'Opaki, who. fired into the fecund place from , a position 16 points behind James, and 9 behind MaTenai, nlso made 41, his scoro including seven biili's-eyes.. t :. .I.'cots, an ex-champion, with tion .for sound marksmanship and cool judgment,in a,tricky wind,, made 36,0n1y, with two misses, four "bulls,", two innsrs, two magpies, and an outer. Jlilroy, of, Nelson,, .who looked very dangerous till his collapse in tho long-range matches on Thursday, crept up again with a score of -W), coining from twentieth in the King's Fifty into sixth in the final. Corporal Keene, of Eketahuna, after making a poor start with two outers, rattled Oil seven "bulls," but finished .up this brilliant run with a clean miss. ioung Fisher, who was carrying the tanner of the Wellington Suburbs Club, made a creditable score of 40, firing into fourteenth, place.• President Marshall, from forty-seventli in the.Fifty, crept up to thirty-fourth in '"the final,,with a score of 32. Lieutenant Duncan, another -of the excluimpions, camo . a nasty . "cropper," dropping from fifteenth ; to forty-first. His score card was a pathetic reeord—ooo4ooo- - Other companions in misfortune were Rifleman Halmshaw, of the Veterans' R.C., Cliristchurch, who had • seven I'iisses, two inners, and/a magpie, and Tiiflemnn J. Dreniian, of Wanganui, who?o fust eight shots passed beyond ken—he made. six, and just squeezed into- the prize list, the last man on the list. .As for' the rest their tale is told in the detailed scores.

James w;as heartily cheered by the spectators. He was lifted into'the champion's chair, and carried in triumph to tho roped platform,: .there :to .receive, the bslt and incidental Honours' at. the ,lian<ls : of Mrs. Massey. The Hon. 'W. F. Massey was also present, and the Hon. R. n.. Rhodes,. Acting-Minister for' Defence, Col. E. S. Heard, Chief of the New Zealand General Staff, Mr. 6. P. Sykes, M.l'., and Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P. The other events of the day included the final for tho Service Championship 'and the United Service Match. By 7 p.m. the battlefield ivas practically, .deserted, only a few of the. camp attendants being left to surrey th«'array of untenanted tents, and arrange for tho transport of the camp equipment".
