PREVIOUS FIRE ON THE TURAKINA.
Tliero was considerable cxoitcment in Wellington .between 10 and 11 a.m. on October 7, 1907, when it bccamb known that this satn'e vessel—the Turakina— which had left port for London, was returning owing to an outbreak of fire amongst her cargo. The news was received from tlie outer tignal station at about 10.3(1 a.m. on the day in question. The Union Company's Tcrawhiti and the fire brigade's big steam engine were put to work, and 1020 tons of water an hour were thrown into tho hold. The water seemed to liavo no effect, for, about half-past seven the fire was worse th«ja ever. Forks of flamo shot up into tho still evening air, and it looked as if the Turakina would have been gutted. Gradually, however, the ominous red of tho inferno below lost its glow, giving place to ugly black smoko mixed with tho wreathing steam, as in the crater of a volcano. At midnight tho fire was out, and tho pump 3 were stopped a litt-lo ■ later. On one other occasion the Turakina was on.fire. This was some time previous to tho big outbreak described above. Tho first fire was discovered in No. 4 hold, while the liner was berthed at the Glasgow Wharf, Wellington.
