Vice-Regal. . His Excellency tlio Governor, Lord Liverpool, and tho Countess of Liverpool arrived in Auckland on Tuesday morning and went into residence at Government House. Captain Charles Shawe, military secretary, and Mr. Gavin Hamilton, private secretary to his Excelloncy, nrrived in Auckland last Friday to prepare for liis Excellency's arrival j and tho Governor and Lady Liverpool were accompanied on Tuesday by Captain Hutton, A.D.C., and Hiss Foljambe. Few definite engagements havo as vet wen made for their Excellencies during their stay in tho district. It will extend over some weeks, but in some respects is dependent upon the arrangements made for the visit of 11.11.5. New Zealand. The only fixture for this week is that their Excellencies will attend the Shacklock benefit cricket match at Victoria Park on Saturday.
Next week will be wholly occupied with iv tour to tho North of Auckland with tho Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Native Affairs. Tho party will leave Auckland by steamer for Whangarei, which will bo reached on Monday morning, and that night will be spent at Kamo Springs. Next day they will visit Eaweno and Kohukolm, meeting a gathering of Natives at Ifawene, At Kaikohe arrangements havo been made for another Maori gathering. liussell, Opua, and Kawakawa will be visited oil tho Friday; and on the Saturday tho party , will take train back to Whangarei, Thcucc they will return to Auckland, being due there on Saturday night. Tho Hon. W. P. Masscy will leave on Monday night for Christchurch, wheto he is to deliver a policy speech on tho following evening,. The Prime Minister will probably follow up his policy speech by speeches at Oxford, in North Canterbury, nnd Waimate in South Canterbury. Ho expects to be absent from Wellington for a fortnight.
Tho Hon. A. L. Herdman inspccted.tho gaol and police stations at Dunedin (yesterday. Ho will leave by the first express this morning for Timaru, and proceed to Christchurch by the second express. Ho will visit tho tree-planting works at Hantner and will go on to Wellington next week. Tho Hon. W- H. Horrics and the Hon. Dr. Pomare are at Tolaga Bay. Tho Hon. A. L. Herdman is at Dunedin, and tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher is at Auckland. The other Cabinet Ministers aro in town. Tlie Hon. B. H. Rhodes goes south tomorrow, and the Hon. w. F. Massey (Prime. Minister) on Monday. The Hon. W. Fr-nser will leave for Napier on Tuesday, and proceed by steamer from that port on the same evening for Gisborne. Mr. V. H. Reed, member for tho Bay of Islands, who has been in town since Tuesday, leaves for tho north this evening.
Mr. D. H. Guthrie, member for Oroua, and Chief Government Whip, arrived in Wellington yesterday, and will return to his district to-day.
Eltliam people are moving in the direction of erecting a memorial to the memory of the late Dr. Harrison, who was practically tho only practitioner in the district for some years (says the "Eltliam Argus"). At a public meeting it was resolved that a fund bo raised by public subscription among the people of Eltliam and tho surrounding districts to provido a suitable memorial to the lato Dr. Harrison. Tho Mayor of Hawera, (Mr. A. W. Gillies) forwarded a cheque'for j!5 ss. together with an apology for his absence. It is expected to raise .£3OO, and the form of the memorial 'will be decided later. The feeling of tho meeting was that it should be a district one, and not a town one.
Mr. A. Paterson, of Dunedin, has taken over the picture business and art gallery for somo years conducted by Mr. ,T. C. Butler (and formerly known "as M'Greeor Wright's) on Lambton Quay. Mr. Paterson is a son-in-law of Mr. Butler, who leaves for England to-day. Sir Alfred Bateman and Mr. Thomas Garnett, members- of tho Empire' 'Trade Commission, will be the guests of honour at a luncheon to be given by the New Zealand Club at 1 p.m. on Monday next. The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. Thomas Wliiteliouse, a very old settler in Wellington M. Negre, a wealthy Frenchman, who is touring New Zealand, will arrivo hero from tho south by the Maunganui this morning. Mr. Herbert Sliortt, who ha? been Mayor of Eastbourne for throo years past, has decided not to contest tho scat this year. It is probable that Mr. William Organ, who has boon a councillor for several' years, will bo elected without opposition.
Mr. Yv. E. Puller, coastal shipping manager for Messrs. Levin and Co., Wellington, has been elected chairman of tho Wellington branch of the Ship Owners' Federation. Mr. W. Deck, the retiring chairman, did not seek re-election. The candidates for scats oil tho first Opunake Harbour Board are: Messrs. Andrew Allan, Robert Campbell, W. F. Ooombridge, T. P. Huglvson, C. H. Hurst, G. Looney, James Macfie, M. J. Macßeynoldb, R. P. Malcolm, A. M'Keown, and A. H. Moore. Tho election is to be held on Monday next. Mr. A. W. Blair hn9 been appointed revising barrister under tho Building Societies Act. Mr. James Rattray (Presbyterian) hits Ijeen appointed an officiating Minister under the Marriag© Act.
Messrs. J. H. N. Curtis, of Sutton, Surrey, England; J R. Clark, of Launceston, Tasmania; and F. J. T. Lyne,. of Tallangatta, Victoria, have been appointed commissioners of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes, of Christchurcli, arrives in Wellington by the Maori from Lyttelton this morning. Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby was last night appointed from nine applicants as director and secretary of the Mastcrton Technical School. Lieutenant-Colonel W. R. Morris has been appointed Military of tho Post and Telegraph Services with tho rank of colonel, vice Colonel D. Robertson, transferred to the reserve of officers. Mr. Leslie Reynolds, C.E., returned from a visit to Nelson last evening. Ho will consult with the Kelson harbourmaster (Mr. Collins) towards tho end of the week with respect to improvements in the formation of the channel through the Boulder Bank.
