The second of the series of London wool sales commenced in Coleman Street on Tuesday evening, and the' tone of the market at the opening was cuitc no to expectations. Fine wools were firm at the closing rates of the January sales, while coarse woolr advanced about 11 per cent." The ,eale is' being well attended, and while American buyers arc operating with caution owing to uncertainty ds to the tarifr changos in the United States, Home and Continental buyers arc operating freely, and«we are assured by.the High Commissioner that the demand exceeds the supply. The fact that coarse crossbrcd3 have advanced will •be gsod sews to the woolgrowers of the North Island, although the advance could not have been unexpected by these, who ..have fallowed market movements pince the close of the last sales. It is satisfactory to note that there is. a fair quantity of New Zealand , wool in the rntitlogues, the total being placed at 75.C1C0 bales. Considering the firmness of the situation and the strength 'of the demand it would occasion no surprise if there is a* further advance as the' salc3 progress.

' MAORILAND STEAM SHIP COMPANY. Tho sixth annual report and balancesheet of the Maoriland Steam Ship Co. for the year ended December 31, 1912, show that the gross profits totalled £3CBQ Is. lid., and the amount derived from interest on deposits, was £50 12s. Bd., mailing a total of £3131 os. 7d. The expenses totalled £910 17s. 7d„ of which salaries accounted for £632, and deducting this the net profit for tho year was £2211 35.. equal to 10 r?r cent, on the capital. There was brought forward from the' previous year £86 3s. 2d., making available £2300 Cs. 2d. The dividend for the year is 5 per cent.., but as the amount of tho paid-un capital is not disclosed in the balance-sheet, wo assume that the "subscribed capital" of £44.000 participates in the dividend, if so, £22M will be absorbed. leaving £100 6s. 2d. to be carried forward, but as the divectors usually receive by way of remuneration one hundred guineas, the balance will be insufTiciont to meet- this cTiaree. The •amount of the dividend paid in February last year was £1100, which is cqu.'il to 5 par cent, on £22,000, aiid that would mean that the shares are paid up to 10s. If the 5 per cent, dividend is on a paid-up capital of £22,000, then t.he dividend, plus the payment to the directors, will absorb £1250, and there will remain to bo carried forward £1050 65."2 d. It is somewhat singular that tho, paid-up capital is not disclosed.

The assets include shipping property, £<0,600: sundry debtors, £1069 13s. 4d.; stores on hand, £200; office furniture, £-15: insurances paid in advance, £956 ss. Jld.; mid cash on deposit, in bank and in hand, £4670 23 . 5d.: total, £47,541 Is. Bd. Tho report says:—"Your directors have to report that with tlie increased pay to cre-.vs of steamers and wharf labourers, holiday payments to officers, etc., and increased price of bunker coals, the cost of running steamer? keeps increasing yearly. The outlook is reasonably satisfactory for 1913. and your (l'rcctors look hopefully forward to a successful-yea,r."

The company appears to have done exceedingly well, and is buildj/ig up a strontr finance. The only liability, apart "subscribed capital," is £1240 15s. 6d. for sundry creditors, against which is cash. £4670 2s. 5d., and sun-dry debtor*. £1069 13s. 4d.

Customs duties collected a* the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £8177 6s. Ltd.

CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Chiistchurch, March 4. The local wheat market is quiet but firm, thcro not having been much grain offering this'last week. Harvesting in North Canterbury will be almost completed this week, very little grain now remaining uncut. Since the late rains pond progress has been made with the threshing out of crops in stook and stacking, but, though there are some pood individual yields, the average i 3 much below that of last, year, especially in oats. The latter arc. dull of sale, as merchants are unable to find any outlet, unless shipment can be made later on to the Uiiitcd Kingdom. Tim North Island demand is very riaek this year, and there appears to bo no disposition to Foeculate in oats. Prices are without change, and the tone o? the market is weak. Vorv little business has yet been done in chaff, an it is diflicult to 'pet. fdimning space to the North Island, and Wellington is being supplied from Blenheim by means of small river steamers. Cna.*. tal steamers do not e-nre to carry chuff because o! its bulk. For forward delivery 50.4; to 525. 6d. is being offered locally. The grass seed market is r/uieL both for ryecrass and cocksfoot. A little business has been dono-in peas, but the bulk of the crop is still unflire'died. For delivery this month £4 still beiiur given for early varieties of potatoes. The early crop fs prolific so far as number? of am concerned, but the percentage of small ones in unusually large. m'ANTfAL CABLEfIRAMF. By Telegraph-Press Aesodat ion—Copyright London, March 4.
