LECTURE ON SLUMS.
"Romance, of a London Slujn" was the title of a lecture delivered' by the Rev, Martin Anstey, M.A., 8.D., general secretary of the London - City Mission, at tho 'i'errace Congregational Church last evening.' The Mayor (Mr. I). M'Laren) presided, and Iho Rev. Mr. Reid Glasson and Rev. Mr. Aspland were also present. The Rev. M. Anstey, in opening his lecture, gave in detail, the work of the m'issioners in the London slums. He stated that, it was their object to link together tho rich and the poor. They endeavoured to get the son of a wealthy family to associate himself with a poor boy, the same conditions applying to tho girls. This brought about' good fellowship, which brightened the otherwise dull and miserable lives of the poor children. He then ins'tanoed a case of four orphans who were, being cared for by a family in very straightened circumstoiices. In spite of these people being so poor, they had taken these little orphans mto their home. He believed that the poor do more for the poor than people realised. The speaker then touched on the question ot overcrowding, and mentioned one house which had 22 rooms, and vet it provided shelter for 44 families. There was a lot of this, and tho' suffering was <le-. plorable. Ha mentioned and dealt for some tinio oil tho good work doiio by a missioner' named Mason. ■ Sir. Anstey leaves for London this afternoon.
