Henry, Christchurch E.G. 4b ON THE MOUNDS. NOTES ON THE SHOOTING. ' The gusty, baffling, nor'-wester that blew across the range provided the trickiest of problems for the men on the mounds. Allowances for deflection had to be constantly varied to meet the ecceufricities of a'wind that blew in from the left one minute, and whipped round to tho rear the next, while great straggling clouds threw their scurrying shadows across the targets. A changing light and an erratic wind are a disastrous combination, as the score-cards bore pathetic witness. Several of tho riflemen managed tu do well at 500 yards, notably Lieutenant Duncan, of Millcrton, and Eifieniau Fogartv, of the Kiwi Club, who each made possibles—ail excellent, achievement in such a wind—but Duncan collapsed at 600 yds., rising with 33 oi\ly, and was "counted out" of the prize list- Fogartv,
a tyro shot, also made n 33 at COO yards, but liis aggregate of 83 got him within four places of the top in the tyro list. Sergeant-Major Montgomery (New Zealand Staff Corps, Dunedin), made 49 500 yards, but oil going down at 600 yards made 37 only. Nobody was lucky enough to get a 49 at 000 yarns. Corporal Clung, of the Royal Now Zealand Artillery, who won the match, made 48 at COO yards, and 47 at 500 yards, and from his winning aggregate of 95 there stretched down the list a dreary tail. Masefiald. of the Sound'; Club, put rip 47 at the first range, and 12 at COO vards, a good useful shoot. James, of the Okatva Rifle Club (previously known as Sergeant .Tames, of the Napier Guards), made 17 at 500 yards, but his 3!) at 000 yards nut him down amongst the "sovereigns." Roots, of Patea. ex-cham-pion. got in 41 at, 500 yards, but his 39 lit 800 put him out of tho prize list..Major Halnin (Reserve) promised well with 47 at 500 vnrds, but failed bnillv at.
