[Dr. Thomns Hodgkin, a British historian, was born at Tottenham, 1831, and was tlie second son of John Hodgkin, barrister. He was educated as a member of the Soeioty of Friends, and took the degree of B.A. at London University. Afterwards he became n pui'tnor in the banking house of Hodgkin, Barnett, and Co., Newcastle-on-T.vne, a Arm afterwards amalgamated with Lloyds' Bank. While continuing in business as a banker, Hodgkin devoted a good deal of time to historical study, and soon became a loading authority on the history of the early middlo ages.] •
