THE HARVEST.
WELL UP TO THE AVEHAGE. Writing in regard to harvest 1 matters, a travelling correspondent says: "I'pon making inquiries, I havo ascertained that the general harvest of Wanganui, lfangitikei, and Alaiiawatu districts is well up to the average, Though the returns in hulk are liardly up to those 1 of last year, the seed has been well towed, so that matters havo been 'equalised. This applies principally to grass-seed, tho Sandou yield being, considered very satisfactory, particularly ■ when the area sown is taken into consideration. The winter crops l have nearly nil done well, but in tlio majority of instances the spring sowings have not yielded at all well—tho effect naturally of nil uncongenial season. Koot crops generally have done well. . , In tho Fordell district tho wheat crops have been .very successful, and ill l . Sharpo is just threshing a field, which is yielding over 50 bushels to tho acre. 1 Wheat in this district has done remarkably well, tho season being most favourable. One farmer a few days ago booked an order for 1500 sacks as soon as he can get it threshed. The straw, too, is also most productive, and quito a big tonnage has already been pressed and railed away, the market price being i£2 a ton. To those living near the railway station tho marketing gives a clear profit of ,£1 a ton, lis. !>eing allowed for pressing and baling, and 6s. for cartage. . 1
