PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of tho Potono Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. j. W. M'Ewan), nnd Councillors Short, List, Wakehain, Cox, and Truenian. Tho British Antarctic Expedition ac.knowledged receipt of the council's resolution of condolence passed at tho last meeting:. The Petono Regatta Committee asked for tho remittance of the amount, promised (.£7) towards the sports on Anniversary Day.—lt was resolved that a cheque ho forwarded at once. Messrs. Chambers and Son advised that tho Roman tiles which it was proposed to put oil the roof of tho gasworks would bo due about April -J. Councillor List thought that the advico was unsatisfactory. Some of the I,wildings wero without a cover. The Mayor pointed out that the writers wcro two months late. Councillor Cex moved: "That Messrs. Chambers and Son bs (riven till April 10 to supply the tiles."—Carried. Mr. M._ 13. Denniston protested against tho crossings recently put, 'down on tho Hutt Road. Ho stated that ho would hold the council responsible I'qi - injury to himself or to his motor-bicycle. Under present conditions all necessary factors wero there for .i fatal accident. Councillors were of the opinion that tho crossings were too high. Tho Mayor argued that the question was much ado about uothing. The letter was received. Tho secretary of the Petono High School asked for spare books or magazines for tho school. On tho motion of the Mayor the librarian was instructed to forward any books not for uso in the Public Library. y ' , . _J.tr. P. M. Cameron applied for a remission of the 10 per cent, penalty on last year's rates. ' On the motion of Councillor the amount was written off. The Wellington Publishing Company regretted that tho council had. decided to insert advertisements in ono Wellington paper only. The applicant submitted that The Dominion should receive a share of the council's advertisements.—Tho Mayor said that tho council always endeavoured to ,advertiso in the paper which would* j produce tho best results. Judging from the past, The Dominion had no causo to complain. • It was resolved to reply accordingly. Messrs. Kirk and Wilson forwarded the agreemont for signature between tho Wellington Rugby Union nnd llio Council -in tho matter of grounds. The Mayor and Councillor. Short wero deputed to sign tho agreemont. Mr. F. C. Petherick (secretary of the Tramway Syndicate) stated that the conditions, sought by tho council, coupled with the industrial unrest in Petone, were too unpromising to warrant tho syndicate going 011 with trams. The syndicate thanked tho council for their past consideration, and offered to pay all legal expenses incurred. Tho Mayor moved: "That the letter be received, and that the solicitor's fee, £T 75.. be forwarded to the syndicate." Councillor Short moved as an amendment: "That half the cost bo defrayed by tho council." ' Councillor Lodder thought that the council should accept no liability in tho matter. Tine motion was carried. The secretary of tho Petono Band invited councillors to a meeting to bo held this evening to discuss tho financial position of tho band.—lt was resolved to accent the invitation. It was resolved to obtain a legal opinion on tho question of warning motorists that crossings wcro put down oil tho Hutt Road. Tho High School secretary requested tho council to assist in tho matter of installing gas in the infant sclvool. Reporting on the matter, tho gas manager stated that tho cost, not including interior work, would bo .£5. Oil the motion of Councillor Short, it was resolved to do the exterior work gratis. Councillor Cox then moved, pursuant to notice: "That tho resolution passed on January 13 last fixing tho sccond Wednesday in the month as tho night for, the Works and Finance Committeo meeting ho rescinded, and that tho council revert back to tho second Friday, as before." Tho mover said that present conditions wero unsatisfactory. Councillors List, Lodder, and Wnkcham opposed tho motion. Councillor Short said that Wednesday was a bad night to hold any meeting. Councillor llrockelbank agreed with Councillor Short. Tho motion was carried. Councillor Short drew attention to overhanging trees and hedges in the borough. Councillor Lodder said that tho officers of tho council should see to this matter. —It was resolved to refer the matter to the inspector. The council then went into committee.
