Greymouth, February 28, Anxiety is felt for tho safety of two men, Scrivener and Ilutchings, who loft \\ oodpicker Bay at 8 o'clock yesterday* morning for Greymouth in Scrivener's launch, which had been stranded at tho bay for several weeks. Tho Harbour Board's tug left at 1.30 p.m. to-day to Bcarch.

Auckland, February 28. A young man named Joseph Pointoa was charged to-day with having carried on tho business of a bookmaker during tho Alexandra l'ark races. A lino of £20 and oostg was imposed.
GAIN IN POPULATION. Auckland, February 28. During February, 1432 persons arrived at tho port of Auckland, and 1178 tailed away. A gain of 890 in population has been secured during tho two months of this year.
ILLEGAL OPERATION.
Auckland, February 28. At the inquest. on Minotaur Carolina Bush, a girl 16 years old, who died in the hospital, Hie jury returned a verdict that an illegal operation was tho cause of death, but that there was not sufficient evidence to enable them to determine whe performed tho operation. r

; KICKED BY A RACEHORSE., (By Teleifraph-—Special Correspondent.) Hastings, February 28. A sad- accident occurred at Hastings tcs day, when tho thirteen-year-old eon oi Mr. Thos. Jones was kicked by a racohorse, and killed almost instantaneously. The lad was holding the horse at Mr, Cameron's training - stable whilo tho trainer prepared to put on 6omo breaking, in gear. Tho horse began . to, piny up, and jumped right over the "boy, and kicked him on tho chin, the blow resulting fatally. An inqu<ist' was held, and 4 verdict of accidental death returned.
NIGHTCAPS MINER KILLED. (By Telegraph—Prosa'Association.) ; Dunedin, February 28. Tho local agents havo been advised that William Ferguson, a single man, waa accidentally killed by a fall of coal on Wednesday morning in the Now Brighton mine, Nightcaps.
BOY DROWNED,
Dunedin, February 28. A boy named Vincont Park, aged seven years and nine months, was drowned at Ravensbourno to-day, Deoeased and his little brother, aged four years, were playing on tho landing stops at tho wharf, and the former fell into the water. TM younger brother says ho told, two men about tho aocident, .but apparently h« failed to make himself , understood. A search for the-body was ,unsuccessful, .
A BOY HURT.
Yesterday Robert Reynolds, of Thorsby Street, a boy employed by the Dunlop Rubber Co., while riding a bicyolo in Taranaki' Street, collided with an express, Reynolds received abrasions on his face and hands. '
