Ho was in tho Constructive Department of the Admiralty from 18G7 t'o 1883, rising to the rank of Chief Constructor; lie. was Professor of Naval Architecture at tho Royal Sehoo. of Naval Architecture, and tho Royal Naval College, 1870-81 ; organised and directed tho warship building department of Armstrong and Co., Newcast'lo, 1883-85; Director of Naval Construction and Assistant Controller of tho Navy, October, 1885, to February, 1902, and during that l>eriod was the responsible designer of all H.M. ships. He resigned this position in consequence of ill-health, and was awarded a special grant of money by vote of Parliament in recognition of exceptional services to tho Navy.]
