A PACIFIC FLEET.
AUSTRALIAN COMMENT. By Telegraph—Prtss Association— Copyright Melbourne, February 28. Commenting on tho Montreal "Star's" statement, Senator Pcarce says:—"At tho 1909 conference the Admiralty submitted a memorandum for a Pacific fleet to wliich Australia and Canada were to contribute. China was to havo a unit to which New Zealand 6hips would bo allied, though under the Admiralty's control. Tho Australian fleet unit was set out, tho number of ships, their capacity and type, and it was agreed by tho conference that they should bo controlled, owned, and named by Australia. That is the scheme we are now carrying out. It is incorrect to say that the Admiralty proposed one fleet, one control, at tho 1909 conference. Moreover, thero was never a hint by tho Admiralty at the 1911 conference that tlioy regarded tho idea of an Australian fleet as a unit to be owned and controlled by Australia as in any way embarrassing, but as a substantial assistance."
