NEW CITY BUILDING.
.' — 4 Messrs. Watkins, Hull, and Wheeler, accountants and auditors, have every rea- . son to lie satisfied with tho very serviceable four-story -building which has been erected for them in Johnston Street by Messrs. Campbell and Burke, from the plans .of Messrs. iloggard and i'rouso. Considering that tho section is only 3Gft. in breadth, the building is most adequate in every respect for the purposes intended. The building is one in which steel, bricks, and concrete have been used in their proper.place., Structurally, it is an up-to-date -steel frame building, with concrete side-walls and floors (reinforced), and brick front and rear walls. 1 The front elevation is designed attractively, but not over elaborately in -red press brick and cement. A suggestion of an arch 'is conveyed in, tho dosign of the ground-floor wiudows, and a decorativo touch is given theL faendo by the "horns of plenty," which fill the niche below tho,archway imthe main entrance. A cornice, projecting above the second story, breaks up tho upper half of the facade nicely. Tho ivhole building is divided by central passages, and all except the top floor are divided into two complete suites of offices, by swing doors, and light-shafts on either side supply light to the central offices. " Tho doors, counters, and desks are all' of picked rimn, and good strongrooms are provided each suite. Tho' building will bo provided with an electric lift, which ascends to a flat roof. This roof, which provides a good deal of open space and a fine view of tho city, is finished off in Neuchate] asphalt. ; 'The building cost between 'and X'/OOO.' Tho land is a city leasehold. The ground floor is occupied by Messrs. Watkins, Hull, and Wheeler, accountants, etc., the Rhodes Trustees, and Messrs. Williams, Hunt, and Co.,.auditors and accountants. , The first floor will bo tenanted in front by Messrs. Williams, Hunt, and Co., tho second floor by Messrs. Gold and Arcus, accountants and auditors, and Air. J. S. Barton, solicitor, and tho whole of the top floor has been leased by tho New Zealand Society of Accountants, who really have splendid quarters. The meet-ing-room in the front of the building is a spacious apartment 36ft. square, with large' casement windows, which givo a s"lpiulidji','lit. Tn addition to that room the (secretary (Mr. Hunt) lias ail Mfico Riul there is a largo library at tho back, and a Toom for the use of the Accountant •Students' Association, all of which have Iteen. furnished tastefully with easy chairs, settees, tables, and desks. . .
