■Fleminflton, 'February 28. During training .operations, Nuwara Eliva did'half a mils First Shot half a mile in SUsec., and Positus three furlongs' in 37Jsec.
. Jockey J. Olscn has been retained to ride Mr J- P- Buchanan's horses at AkaToa County R.C. meeting in CantcrbuiT 'oil March G. Olsen was asked to rido Tannhauser in tho Dunedin Cup, but a prior engagement for Soldiers Cliorns prevented him Accepting tlio invitation, and thus B. Pcoloy caine to rido tho successful horso in the of 1013. "Unforitunately for Olsen, Soldiers' Chorus dropped' out of the race after the jockey lifid declined tho mount on Tannhauser.
•It is anticipated that the operation performed on the pac'ng gelding Dirtican M'Gregor for tln'oiit trouble frill prove successful in time (says the "Southland Times"). The thoroughbred mare Red, White,-and Blue (sister to Blue Ribbon), .'wild' was also treated at Gore in similat •fashion,, is reported to I>a going on well and hopes are entertained of her proving successful on the racecourso later oh.
Nominations for the Fcilding Easter meeting close next Friday.
Then. will bo racing at Dannevirke on Wednesday and Thursday nixt.
In connection with tho Wairarapa Racing. Club's a"utumn meeting, to bo held at i'aiiherinikau on March 22 and 24, owner;- are reminded that nominations close oti Monday next with the club's secVeitcry, Mr. E. A. Laery, Feathcrston. Medallist will havo to carry 71b. penalty in tho Peninsula Cup at Akaroa on Tiu'rsday, and bis weight will therefore bi 9st. 71b.
: It is interesting to no(/> that Medallist and Tannhauser were both weighted at Ost. 21b. in the Waimato Cup. , Eed Earl lias had a good run of luck over thd small sticks. He bad not been seen Out for some time prior to winning on Dunedin Cup day, when he scored his fourth consecutive win.
Courage is not .altogether wanting with soriie punters (says the Dunedin writer "Sentinel"). For instance, Peppin found an astonishing amount of support when 'mating Medallist at even weights in the Apprentices' Plate. Medallist would have to-concede .'abouti threo stone in a handicap, and i& was a .matter of mild surprise tha't'anything started against liim.
The Wanganui'Jockey Club's autumn meeting-will be continued to-day, when the jackson'.Stakes will come on for decision. The following are the final actheir riders, and the weights to be carried'.—Culprit, Bst. lllb. (W. Young)?;;, Gladiole; Bst! lllb. (B. Deeley); Autunintis, Bst. 81b. (C. Emerson); Imagination, -Bst. 51b. '(A. Oliver); Jason, 7st. 21b. (H;_ Trickleba'nk)« Peronilla, Gst. 131b. (W. Bell). The issue is regarded as very open, and Culprit, Gladiole, Autumnus, and Peronilla will all bo well backed. The lasfc-named is such a quick beginner that, v.'ith the course to, suit her, and well handled bv Bell, who seems to bo having a very-lucky run bow- she may be equal to seeiiig out tho six furlongs.
Fresh horses, in North-East and Denise Orme, members of Mr. A. Hall's Wanganui team, are to be raced to-day.
; With the defection of Allegation, who went wrong after winning on Thursday, (Merry Frank is likely to be well fancied again in the mile event to-day. Considering 'that the'gelding was not galloped while at Wanganui, the raco can be depended' upon to do him good, though whether lie.will be equal to defeating North-East is another problem.
','Postillion won in such convincing style on Thursday that he' is likely to be very well fancied in the Matarawa Han-to-day. ■In disbursing his victory in the Wiritoa Hack Race, a gentleman who was present at the'meeting said: "If Oliver ihad: let him go doWni the back, I don't know how far he would have won by."'
No Highden horses are to be raced at Wanganui to-day, and!they are.being sent ; G. Pride would , not have them weighted, evidently thinking that there .were-.-race9 coiiipg oii that';-.would suit them better. ' V,
;■ In the big handicap at Wanganui todiay" Oliver is to' have the mount, on Mira, and L. Wilson-will be up on Labour Day.
As was anticipated in. these columns, his inability to begin quickly seriounly hampered Potoa in tho Flying Handicap at Waiiganui, and soon, after the barrier ,roso lie was struggling hopelessly in the rear of the field, having .been chopped right back. V -
, There is 'to bo a sale of racehorses at Wanganui .to-day, and amongst the'.lots ;fo" be offered is Ediiani (dam of Labour Day), and a two-yeai'-old half-brothor- by Maniopato ta the Soulf 'inare.: "The racehorses Jackpin an'd' EastSviiuV are also to bo put up for sale..
The locallj;-owned Kiiutsford ■ was not injured when' he fell on Thursday, and he is to taki hi 3 place in the Hack Hurdles field to-dav. .•
Besides ric-ing. ..innumerable - jumping competition winners at the various shows this season, J. Shaw, who is well known 'to patrons of A. and P. shows as pilot of Mr. E. Stort's ctack hunters, has-won no fewer than six hunting cups during the present reason. These were the Masterton Hunt Club Cup, on Dauber; the Wanganui Hunt Club, on Gondolier; a cup at Ashhurst on Lady de Vera; and A. and P. show cups at Wanganui, Masterton, and Taihape on Dinizulu.
' .The .question.of instituting a weigi't-for-ago raco on one of its programmes is likely to be, seriously considered by-the committee of the Wairarapa Racing Club before very long, the general opinion being that the club is now quite .in'a position to fall into line with other leading Country clubs in this respect. ■
; In' readiness for the coming autumn 'meeting of tho Wairarapa R.C., additions are being made to the totalisato'r house at Tauherinikart. These, will increase its working capacity by about half as much again. It is intended before tho next New. Year meeting to double tho size of tho present building. Tho'V.R.C. Autumn meeting commences at Flemington, this, afternoon, when among the' events to be decided aro tho V.R.C. St. Leger, the Newmarket Handicap, and the Essendon Stakes, weight for ,age. After reviewing the form displayed at Cft'tilfiel'd on Saturday last by ■Handicap candidates, "Terlinga" writes: "|To 'me the Newmarket Handicap looks remarkably open, and unless this ifternoon's running niters the position altogether; it will remain open. Gigahdra must bo given a show, and others with a fighting chance are Mala—always good up ,the straight—Rathloa, First Shot, Nuwara, ISUya, • Popinjay, Borrosov, Aleconner,' Audacity, and Braggart. Some of these will be knocked out after to-day; but, whatever happens at Cnulfield, Gigandra and Mala must be respectedlor the big sprint. They are genuine racehorses ovor six furlongs.'"
