DOMESTIC PLAYS.
The writer of "A Woman a LettsT in the "Sydney Morning Herald n "® e VfJ don date of December 20, remarks of the close of the dramatio year that it will ; have been remarkable, more for the renaissance of 'domestic plays j L' cHU of any ordinary type. Milestones snll runs a triumphant oourse; w'U other six or eight months. Bunty Pulls the Strings,' though somewhat farcical in its conception, was a domestio ploy, and ran well over a year. ■ ' • " 'Hindle Wakes' and "Rutherford and Son' did good work, and now we have •The Eldest Son,' by John Galsworthy, playing to good houses at tho Kmgsway a wonderfully wtitten slioe of country family life. The Younger Generation, at the Hayraarltet, also a domestic play, is also a groat success. These all represent a type of play for many years aiot seen in our theatres. In all cases the signs of the times are revealed' in the treatment of the parents by their children. . The parents make mistakes, the children judge. But the surprise is that, in spite of tho prosaio scenes m which most of them are set, they are so amusing that the theatres rock with laughter, even though in some phases of the mays tears fall plentifully. Miss' Ethel Warwick's new production at the Queen's, 'Tho Tide,' by Macdonald Hastings, gives opportunity mainly for some really Beautiful acting by Miss Cicely Hamilton. The author, a new man, inclines to the serious and tragic sides of life; he handles them fearlessly, and grips one's interest all the time."
