THE POULTRY INDUSTRY

The Poultry Conference, The annual conference of tli9 New Zealand Poultry Association is to 1)0 hold in tlio Trades 'Hall, Auckland, on March 25, "(i and 27. Several delegates are. attending from tho south, and a very largo attendance is expecetd from tho >iortl Island, where tho poultry industry is advancing with il'apia strides. Iho Canterbury Egg Circle has forwarded the iollowing remits:—l. That the election of president talcs place' th-.-ep months More the annual confeveijeo. Members of athliatcd societies to vote by mail- «■ l" 11 a Fellowship be instituted with tlie designation "F.N.Z.P.A.," same to be conferred only on such persons who have rendered service of tlio highest distinction for tho advancement of tlio poultry industry. Two such Fellowships to be conferred each year by vote of the entire association. 3. That a central bureau shall bo established to collect records of experiments and' investigations/ and that bulletins be printed and issued to poultry producers. 4. That efforts bo put forth to raiso the standard of €ggs and table poultry among farmers. _5. lliat Wellington and Christchurch being tho most centrally-situated cities, the conference be held at each every alternate rear. 0. That a committee be set up to report on a standard for market poultry ' ai J[i' C °A.' D. Acknd, Christchurch, has written a paper for the conference on "Principles of Co-operation in Denmark. Having studied the system of marketing closely while in Denmark, this paper, should be of value to poultry producers.

Export Trade. Mr. J. B. Merrett has received the returns from an Auckland poultrynian who shipped 500 dozen eggs to Vancouver by tho Makura in October last. The eggs sold at Is. 73d., leaving a handsome profit over the price he was receiving locally at the time. Vancouver merchants ox 7 pressed the wislV that eggs in large quantities be shipped as the market in winter was unlimited.

Tho Value of Culling. Whatever may be our opinion in eugenics among humanity, tho writer's convictions are clear-cut in the poultry yard. Sentiment must have no place with tho man who wishes to ( succeed. Kindness there should bo, and a man's fowls will bo all the better for it, but when kindness and sentiment prompt us to keep tho "dear old hens," "the poor weak pullets," and "the darling old roostoV," you may look out for failure. There is a placo for weak men, women and children.- They tend to arouse our sympathy, and remind us of our duty. Many, too, who are weak', physically, ,jre strong' intellectually, and givo us some of our best in music, literature, and art. but there is no placo for the physically unfit in tho poultry yard. The weak only occupy good space, nnd devour good food at a loss. Now is tho time to cull, and ho is a wise man who can, and will, do it.

Youj; second-year liens should be culled rigorously. Take out all those that show signs of weakness. The moult is now on, and weakness is easily perceived. Go through the pullets. Those slow to mature will never-make for profit. Weakness among them is easily discerned. Better to keep 100 good, sound, healthy liirds than 150 indifferent ones. Tho egg market is now high, and eggs aTO 'profitablo, It- will soon fall again, so that pullets not likely to . lay before June will come on for tho cheap market only.

Dear Foods. Evidently' the New South Wales poultrymen are rebelling against tho; dear, foods nov ruling in Austialin. Tho "Daily Telegraph" of February 22 says: 'It is about timo there was a united public protest by poultry farmers and other users of mill offal against the millers' manipulation of the maTkot for bran and pollard. The producers badly need a representative association to enable them to speak with tno voice. Combination must bo met by combination. A lvminal subscription would suffice, and something undoubtedly could bo achieved., On tho other hand, whilo.-tho poultry farmers are divided units, _ they are simply pawns in tho game. Now w tho time for action.

A correspondent writes:—"lf there_ is any truth as to a pollard and bran ring, I wAuhl suggest that all poultry keepers in.tile-State use only corn and wheat until such timo as it suits the convenience of tho ring to seek buyers." . A "strike" of this sort, would not work if it hit the farmers' pocket .harder than even the millers are doing.

. One of our. large egg farmers who has been a regular and extensive purchaser of mill offal for many'years, is among those who lins not been able to buy good pollard from;the millers' ring. Instead, lie is now using flour at £6 per ton mixed with equal parts, of sharps at £7, 10s. per ton., the. mash comprising.,one part of this mixture to two of bran. ''With bran at the millers' quotation of io 10s. this feed works out at £G as. per ton. Wheat at 3s. 9d. is equivalent to ,£G ss. per short ton, and it is belter fee<l. In using whole wheat meal it is necessary to give, a greater proportion of bulky", nitrogeneous food such as lucerne chaff.
