MASTERTON NOTES.

Mastorton, February 28. A successful garden party was held at the residence of Mr. 1\ L. Hollings, it Lansdowne, yesterday, in aid of the organ fund of tho Lansdowno Presbyterian Church. Croquet, lawn tennis, and other games were indulged in. A fancy goods and a fruit-stall wero on tlie ground. The pupils of Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby gave an elocutionary and dramatic entertainment in the Town Hall last evening. In the Magistrate's Court to-day a number of Territorials were fined for failing to render the personal service required of them under the Defence Act. Only ono bankruptcy lias been recorded in the Wairarapa during the month, of February. Considerable quantities of clinff ana straw are at present being railed from Masterton to Wellington. The supply of milk to Jho "Wairarapa and Forty-Milo Bush dairy factories _ is keeping up remarkably well, considering the dryness of the season., The Masterton Cycling Club held a mile and a half race on the Park Oval last evening. The event was won by T. W. Treen, with H. Crawley second, and C. Valler third. Messrs. W. 11. Jackson, H. J. O'Learj, ,T. N. Coradine, C. E. Daniell, and P. Fiest were last night re-elected managers of the Masterton Technical School. Mr. W. 11. Jackson was re-elected chairman. It was decided to call for applications for a director-secretary at a salary of £80 per year. The Rev. J. S. Young, pastor of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church, is at present an inmato of the Masterton Hospital. The case is ono of typhoid fever. Miss L. M'Gregor was tendered a congregational "social" in ICnox Hall, prior to her departure for the Old Country. She was presented with a travelling-rug and a lady's companion. The local Hockey Club defeated Carterton A in a cricket mntcli concluded on Park Oval yesterday. This leaves Carterton B team winners of tho Thursday championship. Masterton swimmers appropriated nearly the whole of the events at the Carterton swimming carnival on Thursday. Tlie.v also won tho teams relay race.

Miss Camobell. who has been teacher in charge of the ICainaroro School for over Boven years, and who is about to leave on a visit to thn Old Country, vrns presented by tho pupils with a travelling-rug. and by ex-pupils with a silver-backed brush and comb.

Two events in connection with the Wnirarana Amateur Athletic Club were got off on tlio Park Ovnl Inst evening. Tlio 100 yds. handicap was won by G. Hood, and the -tiflyds. handicap by J. Bradbury. At a meeting of the oommitteo of tho club last evening it was decided to close tho sepson on April 3, Tho Maslerton Chamber of Commerce to-day decided that it would not be to its advantage to join the proposed Chamber of Commerce Association. A letter from tho Palmerston Chamber asking for support in a. protest against tho Sandon tramway being extended to the Main Trunk railway was received. It is expected that the Minister for Public Works will visit this district early in April. J)r. Newman, M.l\, has intimated his intention of accompanying the Minister.

Tho dairy companies in tho WaiTarapn are complaining of shortage of insulated trucks for cheese. A deputation is to wait on tho Minister next week.

Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received instructions to sell 450 horses by public auction. The sale will bo held at TatlcrsaH's, Hawera, on i'Yidav and Saturday, March 7 and 8, beginning at 10 a.m. eaoh day. The Vacuum Oil Company, Ltd., Wellington, announce that, commencing from March 1. all Pratt's petroleum spirits will be sold by the case, instend of by tho gallon.
