NOTES ON THE RACING,

IBy" Telegraph.—Spocial Reporter.) . ■ '■'••• Wanganul, February 27. Cap Day at Wangnmii 7was close and muggy, but this did not prevent a reCord crowd from turning out. The recent

enlargements to the grandstand and lawn afforded room for all to view tho racing in 1 comfort, the track was in perfect order, ] and the racing was of a very high stan- ; dard. Tho Cud went'to tho Auckland sportsman, Mr.'E. W. Alison, whose col- t ours were also carried successfully by Allegation. . The light-weight jockey, W. < Bell, rode three winners during tho day. The sport was free from any irregulari- ; ties, and tho stipendiary steward had a j very easy day, There were a couple of . minor falls in tho hurdle. races, but no 1 dainago was done. ' i , In a good betting race Merry Frank was made favourite for the opening i event, but there was very little difference , between him and Patriotic. After a slight ' delay tho field was sent off to an excel- j lent start. Patriotic was the'quickest to begin, but Red Lupin soon, headed him, ] and, running down the back, the order was: Red Lupin, Patriotic, Allegation, ( Distinction, and Merry Frank. The last- ; nailed was moved up at tho lialf mile, ; and he entered the straight* on terms ] with Allegation. For a moment or two j the favourite seemed-likely to win, but : the Auckland-owned 'animal, favoured fcy < "his light weight, struggled on and scored ( by a head. Distinction was a fair third, j and then came Aruake, Con the Shaugh- < raun, and Coroinandel, with Ceylon and Tlwari. in the rear of field. The win- ; ner is d. big, plain-looking gelding by Gladstone from that good mare, Aleger. ] He showed winning form at lakapuna > last month. , . I Heather Champinade, and Lockwood | carried tho public support :n the Petre Hack Handicap. At the start. Oliver, on the' first-named, was-out quickly, but ( Silver Rose carried him along at a fast , pa'ce, and-the'field quickly_ strung ont. , Lookwood moved ■ into third position rounding the bend, nnd iu the straight ( ho ran ■ past tho two leaders, and won comfortably. - Oliver had tx> rule tho i favourite very hard to beat Silver Koso bv a head. Chamanade ran yqry.oadly,. and so did Gorbera. Deniso Orme. Postulion, and Jackpin were scratched. -■ Sandy Paul, looked the best of good things in the Westtnere. Hurdles, and lie duly materialised. ;His supporters sent him out. favourite. I Over the first nnlo Marton was pulling very hard in front, but six furlongs from homo M'Flynn took th».favourite to t'he front, and, jumping nicely, he beat Bercola, who put up a good race, but jumped badly. Waterworks ran in bandages, and was tailed of? last at tha' finish. . Whimper ran well for a milo, but'when the pace was put on ho was soon found wanting. ■ Allure, with Flynn in'tho saddle, was the. medium of a plunge, in the Hack Hurdles, and ho won, but had nothing to spare afc the finish. Timothy (M'Flynn) made the running till the half-mile, when Allure took charge. ' Rounding the bona Serenity ran up to them, but ho got into .the last fence land spoilt what looked like ail excellent chance of scoring. KnulSford was heavily backed, but ho fell opposite , the • stand. the first time round when occupying a forward position. Tho Cup came next, and nearly ,£SOOO was, invested on* the machine.' _. Labour Day, as was anticipated, finished, up favourite. In the bird-cave the favourite looked big, but-solid. ■ Mira was lighter than usual, but shrewd; followers of tho I game , thought that he, would run bstter in oonsequenco. : Bronze /was a' perfect picture, and was as quiet as a sheep. was on the light side, and so was Domino,-but Cheddar and Master Laddo did not look ready. Tire--some was tho same light-fleshed animal as Before,..but.Moutoa Girl boro a -well- , trained nppearance, and so did Lady Menschikoif. At the barrier,_ Master Laddo, Moutoa Girl, and Labour Day were on-tho inside, with Bronze and Composed oiM-ho : outside. ■ A reallv good dispatch was made at the first attempt, and tho field moved together for nearly a furlong. Then Cheddar led from Tiresome, Master Laddo,' and Moutoa Girl. Entering tho straight the pacd was little better than a crawl, allowing Masterpiece/and' Composed.''who had oeeh slow to find their feet",'toioin, the field. Passing the stand the whulo field was bunched, Bronze and Labour Day being on the rails, just behind ; Mira,"Cheddar, and Master•Laddfl'.;.,Here: Masterpiece'got into a mix_up,' andaelt' back. ' At -tho : six furlongs Tiresome and Master Laddo led 0 bunched field;land, afurlong further,. Bromrhcaded M) r ? and went up on-to the-rails, but Labour Day . was too'lato. in,trying for tho samo opening)'" At-, tho- half-milo ..Tijesoms headed. Master Laddor and, a furious further, on,. tlio •Auckland • mare had a .thrco lengths lead, ■ but the -'others were running four-m a line, with! Labour Day, ,on the outside, becoming prominent. A W'k further on Bronze received a slight che jk; Tire.jim was first into the straight, and as. they lined up for.the run. home, labour Day (on, the. outsido), Mira, and Moutoa. Girl, were all nrominent. Suddenly Oliver got an opening on the rails, and Bronze.came with a lightning run, but did not reach Tiresome, who won by a length and a .hall. Mira was; third, and then came Labour Day, Master Laddo,-Moutoa Girl, Domino, and Cheddar,'in a cluster, with Composed and Masterpiece last. Jho .luck of the Tace was certainly .with the winuor, who aided by her light weight, was i always able to go the pacc,'and.commands-good position. Labour Day and Bronze had all the bad luck and in a lesser, degree, Lady Menschikoff .was a victim. ..Summed up it looked as* if the two favourites should -have-run first and second. '. ■ _' .Tho "elect" all wanted to be on Poronilla' in ? the Juvenile Handipap which. Mr.' Nidd's filly won . very comfortably. Eocene was first away, but Peronilla soon took charge, and was not. again headed; ■Astor .coino frotn. a long way. back and ran into second place, but in tho last few strides, Eocene.cam©"again,.and just cut him out. Jnson was closo up fourth. ■ The Wiritoa Hack Pace was an exercise canter for Postillion who, ridden by Oliver,-;was-in front from the rise of the barrier, and was not headed. 1 Tho Adyanco .colt was a great machine favourite, and lie won in a manner suggesting much better deeds in future. White Crane, who has a bit of a reputation, was second,!, witli Patronymic, Dckkho, and Monologues in that order.' ' The double event layers : wero busy "reinsuring" in'the Flying. Handicap, and in consequenco of their investments, several runners were well supported, that on form could have: no chancp. Autuinnus, who had been favourite sinco the appearance of, the weights, retained .his position, and won after a good race.' Ineuru, Styx, Gladiole, and,Grattan were most prominent in the early, stages, but entering the straight, Makara. ran up, and quickly settled the leaders. Just as ho appeared, to have the race won, Autumnus camo fast'on tho outsido, and finishing in his bull-dog fashion, gained the verdict by clear margin.
