Barley (Imperial Service Order) 'and member of tho Institute of Civil Engineers of Great' Britain, who was engaged by the Groymouth Harbour Board to inspect Groymouth Harbour,. visited Hokitika by motor-car accompanied by Mr. R. W. Holmes (engineer-in-chief to tho Public Works, Department).' The Hokitika Harbour, Board Engineer (Mr. H. T. Toogood)'met Mr. Darley at Greymouth,. and on arrival at_ Hokitika a thorough inspection of tlip river, tho harbour works, and the plans'of'tho''proposed harbour improvements was Iliads by Mr. Darley, and accompanied by. the members'of the Harbour Board a motor journey was mado down the river to'the entrance. Mr. Darley said that tlio. best had boon made of tho existing stnto of tho harbour, and that tho works now being carried out wero on the proper, lines. Ho said that tho curvature of the north wall demanded tho further extension of the south wall''to carry tho currents in' flood time well on to the bar and ensure a straight run to sea, Further improvements could be mado by tho internal training of the river currents, but the cost of the necessary works made them prohibitive, Every additional length of the south wall would make an J improvement, and, that wall should un-T doubtedly bo proceeded with. : 111 answer to a question Mr. Darley sold that if the river were trained down tho middlo channel it would be necessary to shift tho wharves, as tho river at tho present berthage would silt up. Ho had spoken to the members in the meantime to indicate tho lines on which his report would run to.ennblo the contract at present pending to be proceeded with. . Mr. Holmes stated that flic Order-in-Council for the extension of tho south wall would be to hand in a few Mays. On completion of his visit to varimis New Zealand harbours, including Greymouth, Westport,! Hokitika, Patea, and Wairau, Mr. Darley proceeds to'' South, Africa to report on two harbours there. 110 proposes to leave Now/ Zealand on March 6.
