FIRST MIiETING YESTKIiDAY. . ' The \ members of the Forestry Commission, Messrs. H. D. M. (chairnian), T. W. iVdams, S'. J. Clarke, F. Y. Ivethbridge, C,- P. Murdoch, and Dr. L. Cockayne, F.R.S., held their first meeting .yesterday in Wellington. [ ' ',•■•• The lion. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) attended and wished the commissioners success in-their travel* and work, and expressed an opinion that! the outcome of thoir labours, would lie i'pr.the- good of. tho Dominion penernlly. ; Tho commission decided|to leave for Itiyercargill to-niorrow evciling, and, making a start in. Southland, work its wny northward through tho j South Island. •The inquiry will be continued through the North Island afterwards,'. Written evidence will lie taken by the commission wherever poisiblo, so as to facilitate the proceedings, Mr. Philip Turner, of the Scenery Preservation' Departriient, hns been appointed secretary to tho commission, and Mr. W. 11. Russell, 1 , of the Hansard staff, will act ai official reporter.
