■'■■;■ :-*—- , .'. Mr. Albert IC, Smiley, the sago and philanthropist of Mohonk, died recently, aged .84, at Rcdlnnds, California. Mr. Smiley wag an ardent worker for international peace, and for fair treatment of subject peoples. . Ho and. hid brother founded tho Lake Mohonk Hotel, in the Catskills of Now York : State, and year by year invited a company of. eminent men (English as well as American)' to meet and discuss peace and 'such, ques- . tions. Mr. Smiley, was a Quaker, and at his magnificent' hotel at Lake Mohonk ho enforced rigidly Puritan laws. No motor-cur was allowed on tho estate. No alcoholic liquor was permitted to enter tho hotel. Morning prayers v nnd Bible readings were held every morning. As a summer rc*rt—a sort of rest cure— Lake Mohonk had n great reputation) and r tourists flocked thcro in great numbers.. Tho conferences held there we've fully'roported, and exerted a deep influence oiv public opinion. Dr. Clifford was ono of Mr. Smilcy's guests on his last visit to America. 1 ■ '
