WESTPORT'S EARTHQUAKE.

Astronomer; reports that tho - Now Zealand, .earthquake, was registered -in Sydney, but that the record was not what might have been expected from the cabled accounts.,; Th 6 seismic waves caused only a very small displacement here. The centre of the disturbance! had most'likely occurred in strata direotly under.the surface.. The earthwaves would thus.quickly reach the surface and causo considerable damage, but, '.tho severity would be felt, only locally. • ' The tremor,reached hero at fifteen .minutes two seconds past 111 o'clock on the morning of the 22nd,'and the-maximum was reached at eighteen minutes nine seconds past 11. The largest, waves were only of 0.4 millimetres amplitude.
