BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
REGISTRATION AMENDMENTS. - During the. last session of Parliament an amendment of the Births and Deaths -Registration ' Act was passed, and these amendments will come: into operation on Saturday, next,- March 1. The amended; Act requires that in future the usual address of the parents is to he stated'in a notification of birth, which must he endorsed by somo person present at the birth. The time for notification in a borough lias bejen. reduced from the present limit of 72 hours to 48 hours, wfclo outside of boroughs tho present limit of 21 days romains in force. In future still-birihs must bo notified and registered.' Another clause deals with'the registration of previously unregistered births. It is enacted that such births can be registered within twelve months after tho passiDg of the Act, that is, till November 6, 1913. ■■•',■ In tho matter of tho registration of deaths, the following amendments are introduced;— The undertaker becomes solely- responsible for tho registration of a death, and registration mus.£ bo effected within throe 'days after death If it takes place in a borough, or within seven days in any other case. In future, also, the age of the widow must bo given with tho. notification of her husband's death, this being for statistical purposes) Certificate of cause of death is in future to bo given by a medical practitioner forthwith, and the medical practitioner is required lo state, to-tho best of his knowledge, th». duration of tho illness preceding death.
