A MAN : DROWNED. .(By TcltsTapU.—Spcolnl Oorrsspondent.) Hokitika, February, 2&. Tho police received advico yesterday afternoon that Win. Corkill, a single man, jlmd been drowned in the' Waiho.'River, South' Westtand, yesterday, morning.' It is stated that deceased was fording some horses with d party of tourists to the glacier .under his Vharga. There was a considerable fresh in the river and,Corkill was washed down tlio stream. The body was found at mid-day yesterday. Tlio Deputy-Coroner (Mr. J. W. Thompson) left for Wailio last night to hold an inquest; It is understood that deceased has some relations in tho Nelson district. The inquest was held at Waiho to-day. Joseph Wright, aged GO, night porter, at tho Excelsior Hotel, wa9 fatally in-' jured this morning by falling: off a ladder. Apparently he had been attempting to remove boxes off a roof at the rear or tho building and slipped. Ho expired afew minutes after the accident. .He lea,ves a widow. • v *- DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE. Auckland, Fobruary 21. A distressing accident, which happened at Mt. Eden this morning, resulted in a child losing the sight of. her eye.' The mother, who was getting ready for going out, was about to put on her hat. Sho" had two hatpins in her hand..Not noticing tho pins tho child ran against them, and they entered the eye. Medical aid was at once summoned, but the little sufferer's oya was so badly injured that'she has lost the sight of it. . . PAEKAKARIKI FATALITY. An inquest will bo held at the Magistrate's Court, 1 Wellington, at 10 o'clock this morning concerning the death' of Walter Francis Pengelly, who is reported to have been drowned at Paekaxariki beach on Tuesday, through tho capsizing of a fishing boat. FALL FROM A SCAFFOLD. Frank Tiglie, a carpenter, who resides at Northland, fell 20 feet from a 6caffold yesterday and broko one of his arms. PAINTER INJURED. Yesterday morning John Russoll, a painter, who lives at 122 Vivian Street, and is in tho employ of. A. J. Watts, fell from tho top of tho second floor of Whitcombo and Tombs, Lambton Qnav premises, which are being rebuilt. Russell fell on to a trapdoor which, fortunately, was closed.
