SWIMMING.
11 Pi "Smsil."] ' LAST CARNIVAL Of- THE YEAR. Wo Must ,Bow to "Klsrriet." The last two (unctions of iritorcst this bobeon will be this Wellington Ainatour: Swifnniing. Club't. carnival, which takes place' at. the'To Aro Baths this afternoon aiid the Swifts Indies carnival which is set' down for tho following' Saturday. It rather appears to the writer to bo quite young in the soasoii. to'finish off the'carnivals for good and all, but such is tlio ordered and inevitable state of tilings, ,and, liko Hie Turk who every time bows to'"Kismet,"'we, too, must bow to this. JlnylM the Old' Boys' Club- wil) eonio to light with a''darnival, but' so far there does not seem to be much likelihood. Wellington Club's Carnival. 1 Tho Wellington Club's programme for .to-day is certainly attractive. . The star .item is. the' 220 yds. championship. This lis,tho only event in which the entries arc not up to' tho number which oie would naturally expect. Tho gossips 'liavo it that-the result'.of'tho-raco will rest beitwecn "Tiny" Freyberp; and ,"I?eg." Ilenly. .Both have been training lately. ■■"'Tho next'event of interest will bo the lOOydg. ladies', bracelet, for which about 50. entries Ijavo -tjcen Welson to Compels. 1 Perhaps, it is of interest to state at this stag©; that' ..Welsouj the Auckland! crack, is to competo in the 50, 100, and 440 yds; events. As a fast, swimmer Welson is next to Maloolm Champion, and his times for the above distances would bo hard to beat by local swimmers. His time for fho "fifty" distance is stated to about 2bsoc.i' for the. 100 yds. ■ about• 03 or Msec., and for the 410 distance is Sniih. 50sec. Healy's timo for tho last-mention-cd distance', is about Gmin. 125e0,. The fact that he is. competing in the threo ■distances should increaso tho interest jn the carnival. Other Events on Programme. • Between GO and 70 entries hare been received for tho iaOyds. event, and soinp interesting racing should be seen. Excel? lent entries have also/been received for the 440 yds. race. The. club is also'putting on an exhibition of diving for the younger enthusiasts. '■ The race for the Uutliie Cup 'should prove an interesting event. Tho cup is purely for competition' amongst schoolboys, and ever since it? jtreseptatioirisorao' years ago, Cl.vdo Quay bcliool lifivo been tho holders. Tho event takes tl|e form of a relay race, four'boys .competing in each team. At time of writing fivo schools had entered teams. 1 1 On the whole capital entries have been received, and, as stated dbove, the carnival H'M be most interesting from a swimmer's point of view. Of otmrsc, there •is the other point of view—that of the spectators, and they aro generally hard to please. If, however, the spectators have the real swimming instinct—and they irtust have some or they would not attend—they are bound to enjoy tho carnival.' Water Polo, The Wellington C|ub is to meet Old ■Boys' Club in a water-polo match at tho To Aro Baths on Tuesday evening next. Both teams are very Eti'ong, ami a good game should result. Tho Blair Ci|p, Last Saturday afternoon the Worscr Bay Swimming Chib'deeided the raco for the Blair Cup, over a course-of! half a mile. Thero were six starters, and the race resulted in a ivin for Rountreo, junr., who had a start of 4min. !!Ssec. W. G. Morpeth (20sec.) came second, and L. Silver (scr.) came third. The 'winner is to hold the cup for a year, or until such tiiuo wheu he is defeated.
