INSPECTION OF LIGHTHOUSES.
« — ' - THE NEW CASTLEPOINT TOWER, Tho Governfnent steamer Hinemoa ar-. rived at Auckland on Wednesday evening last, after having visited tlui lighthouses on the run from Wellington. A call was made at Castlepoint on February , 18, whero a light-keeper and.his wife were landed. • On tho following Monday. East Cap was :visited, where stores and a light-keeper were also landed. . On Tuesday the vessel' called at Mercury Bay, .where tho painting of a beaoon was finished. At Cuvier Island stores wero landed, and after a call at Tiri tho. vessel 1 camo into port. Fair weather was encountered on tho voyage. Mr. G. Allport, Secretary of' the Marino Department, who is making a tour of inspection of the lighthouses, informed a "New Zealand Herald" representative that he was very pleased with the now light at Castlepoint, which is working very satisfactorily. Tho Hinemoa lias on board an acie-tone-acetyleno light and tower, which will be left at tho Chicken Island. Tho now light will be erected somo limo next month. A visit is to bo paid to tlio Kaipara River, when repairs to tlio Shelly Beach light will bo effected. ■ Tho Hinemoa sails early this morning with stores, etc., for the lighthouses north of Auckland. She will then proceed via Onehunga back to Wellington. A light will then bo erected at Karori Rock, near tho spot whero the Penguin was wrecked.
