WELCOME RAIN.
. y —.—. (By MfgTaph.—Spoolol CJorreaponient.) Auckland, February 19. After an unusually long , spell of dry weather rain set in yesterday which: should it-, continue for a few days, will mean a Bain of tens of thousands ol pounds to those engaged in tho dairying industry. The position had become serious in many districts, particularly between Auckland and Drury, Where the pasture 'was dried up and water for the cattle was slso becoming scarce in many places. Milk vendors in particular havo had an anxious time during the past month, owing to the difficulty in securing supplies to meet the demands of the city, and suburbs. Milk has been brought down to town from much longer distances than usual, as far up as Helensville. Milk has advanced in price owing to the heavy supplies drawn for: the city, as' every gallon of cream means the loss of ,ton gallons of milk. Vendors have latterly been cutting off the supply of the former article where possible in order to have enough milk to keep their customers going. "It is just raining sovereigns if it only oontinues," was the pleased remark of one gentleman interested in the dairying industry. It was explained, that unless the rain continues for a few days it will be a serious thing for farmors,' a 9 a few light showers followed, by hot sunshine would do more harm than , good. -Present indications are for a continuation of wet weather. • ■
