PROVINCIAL CENTRES.
(From Oar 6neclal Correspondents.) -4 OTAKI. At tho last meeting of tho Otaki Town Board, Mr. Byron Brown brought up tho matter of beautifying the town. Ho stated that ha hoped that tho Ixiard would do its best to "tidy tho streets,"'etc., and help to mako Otaki what it' should be—one of tho prettiest little towns in the Dominion. Tliis is a worthy object, and no doubt thosi residents who take interest in such matters aro glad to Town Board taking nn interest in them. Unfortunately, in the past many residents havo allowed their fences, buildings, etc., to get into disrepair, and' tho live hedges to spread over the footpaths. Many a visitor has come into the place, and has gone away feeling'anything but cdiried by tho lade of neatness in and about tho town. While the Town Board can do a great deal to assist the town, the great part lies with the citizens themselves. The death oocurred thi9 week of Mr. William Glacken, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs Denis Glacken, of Hautere Cross. :Deoeased was for a considerable period a well-known marine engineer. The Methodist Choir picnio was held yesterday afternoon in hno weather, and there was a large attendance. _ Tho Native College pupils also held a similar function. ; FEILDING. At a meeting -of the Feilding branch of the United Labour party the chief business was to elect olhceTS.. Mr. J. G. Hariord was elected president, Mr. Mulvaney organising secretary, and Mr. C. Cummings treasurer. Mr. Harford, only took office on condition that at the Labour Conference to be held in Wellington at Easter the United Labour party adhered to its present pacific policy, and did not identify itself with the'platform or tactics or the Federation of Labour. ~ ■ The weather prevailing here during the. last few weeks nas not proved very satisfactory for farmers generally. Hain. .is badly needed. The gales of last .week dried things up considerably, and tho heat since has been excessive. Crops aro not making much headway, and there is no perceptible growth in the grass. Water for stock and household- purposes is becomingscarce, and settlers are commencing to cart from tho streams. CARTERTON. , 1 Constable D. B. Murray, of Ivaitangata, South Island, has been appointed senior constable, succeeding the late Constable B. C. Carmody. ; ;Mr. T. W. The building which-is atpresent serving tho purpose is not at-all-convenient, and the settlers are now 1 moving.in tlie matter of getting a new building. At a meeting held to discuss' tho subject it was, reported that the Department desired that a site should: be,given by the settlers, arid, this; being l 'done the work of erecting a ■structufe -.wo'uld he gono on with at once'. This I 'request was strongly .disapproved of, as; a'site'close to tho old one, a ounrter-acre, with a 33ft. frontage, was available for ,£ls,' and rather than subscribe' towards- its purchase the settlers would sooner give twice the amount to'the hospital. A resolution was carried requesting the Government ti> purchase the section offered, and to ■ proceed with the erection: of a suitable building.. A sub-committee, consisting of : Messrs. A. Daysh, .T; A: Counell. and Ii; ; Jl'Liuen, were appointed to further the resolution and call another meeting . if necessary: '
