The Tramway , Committee of the City Council recommended to tho council Which met last night, that the Tramways Board' of Management 'should bo granted authority to alter the track at tiio Eug. ' : Jt was'stated by tho Mayor J (itr. D. MLaren) that the idea was to take the line right uj> to Newtown' Park gate..' Ho was. of . opinion tliat that was. sound policy. He was of opinion, and so was the chairman vof tho Tramway Board, that a single line should bo taken to the Park gates right 'away. > ' A councillor: With a double lino later on.- • Tho Mavor: Yes., Mr. M'Lnwn lidded that he thought it might bo possiblo to make tho extension by the timo of the oonn lis; Easter carnival. • ■ Tho Mayof' moved to add to the recommendation to the effect that tho Tramway Board should be authorised to proceed with tlie extension of a single line un to tho Park gates. Councillor G. Shirfcliffo thought tlitit it would bo better to defer the matter till they could make the double track. If they could not pet it done in tinm for. the carnival they should leave it over until a general consideration of tramway matters was undertaken. Councillor L. M'Kenzie said that it was strange if tho pliey of the councilwas to be influenced by a fow days' carnival. However, the-thing was that they wero going, to have tremendous-football crowds at Newtown Purl; next winter, 60 if tho Inattir Was worth, going on with it should bo done in time to cater for those crowds. . • After further discussion the recommen-dation,-with tho Mayor's addition, > was adopted. ■ . i ' '
