SPARK IN THE SHAVINGS.
BLAZE AT ODLIN'S. A big, dark volumo of 6moke, circling' and drifting 'languidly from tho vicinity" of Mount Cook towards Newtown, shortly befori 5 o'clock yesterday morning, denoted tho presence of a fire in tho city. The outbreak was in tho timber mill and joinery department of Messrs. C. and A. Odlin, <n Taranaki Streot, near the Mount Cook Boys' School. The yard covers about two acres of ground, and includes milling apparatus and a joinery department, tho latter of which is situaated 6n the first floor of tho mill building. Tho llnmes were bursting through tho roof of the joinery department when the City Fire Brigade arrived, and it is thought that tho fire had been smouldering for some hours. Superintendent Tait decided that the best thing fpr.the brigade to do was to prevent .tho collapse of the first floor, under which was a Jftuntity of valuable machinery. Tho brigado succeeded in confining tire flames to tho joinery department, and the result was that the machinery is practically undamaged. Ono machino alone cost about .£I4OO to instal. Tho machinery in tho joinery department was sovorelv damaged, and. in this department' the loss amounts to about £2000. Tho timber stacked in tho yard, also, suffered somewhat. It is surmised that a spark from on engine on the promises foiling nmong the shavings caused tho outbreak. Tho firm was carrying its own insurance.
