■■ COUNCIL MEETS. SALARIES & APPOINTMENTS. Tho monthly meeting of the Victoria. CollegS Council was held last night. There were present! Mr. Chas. Wilson (chairman), tho Hon. A. L. IJerdruau, tho Rev. W. A. Evans, Dr. Prendergast Knight, and Messrs, It. M'Calluin, if.P., A. I). Meek, J. GJ W. Aitken, P. M'Nab, T. R, Fleming, C. Watson, 11. 11. Ostler, A. R. Atkinson, and Win. Ferguson. Leave of absence was granted to Sir Robert Stout,' and to Messrs, A. T. Maginnitr and A. W, Hon,', The balance at the bank was shown, as .£1498, which by tho deduction of .£855 is; 2d. required for monthly payments would, be p reduced to .£642 15s. lOd. TIIO chairman formally welcomed the Hon. A.\L. Herdman, who succeeds the Hon. H. D. Bell as representative of the Professorial Board. Tho last three or four members of Cabinet that had sat with them had beeii good friends to the council, and tho chairman believed Mr. Herdman would be a good friend too. \ The, Hon. A'. L. Herdman assured the meeting he came there in no antagonistic spirit. (Laughter.) Ho thanked the chairman for his remarks, and mentioned that ho considered it an honour to hav© been elected to a Mat on the council. He would fulfil his dutios as representative of the Professorial Board with a great deal of pleasure. The Students' Association applied . for permission to mako a charge,at the gymnasium on certain nights.'The matter was left' in the hands of the chairman and treasurer. .
On thß motion of Mr. M'Nab, seconded by Mr. M'Callum, it was decided that in future the meetings of the council should bo held at 7.30 p.m. On the motion of Mr. Aitken, the oouncil passed a resolution condoling with the relatives of'Captain'Scott and the other explorers who perished in the Antarctio Circle. Tlje resolution will in due course be communicated to the relatives. ■ The Library Committee was dissolved. Its duties will bo carried out by the finance Committee, which will in future be known as the Finance and General Purposes Coiumitto3. , . | Salaries and other matters wcro discussed in committee. Tho salaries of Professors Hunter and Laby were brought up to the . level of the other professors. Several: small , increases were made in other salaries. Now officers were appointed as follow: —A demonstrator in psychology at a salary ■of .£80;. a demonstrator in physics. JCISO; and an . assistant to Professor Garrow, .£IOO. ..... :
