Knight refused to talk to interviewers, and made an appeal to them not to pester him. He threatened to throw a press photographer overboard. Knight has created a favourable impres-, sion aboard. He kept in thb bnck j ground, though he played cricket. The passengers believe his defence, as cabled yesterday. . . . PASSENGERS SURPRISED. (Rec. February' 19, 11.15 p.m.) Cape Town,\Fobruary 14. The SlO passengers pf the Port Lincoln were ignorant of Knight's identity until the interviewers and' photographers boarded the vessel and searched for the socalled' honey-mooning couple. The captain, and wireless operator alone were 'awarq of the identity of Knight, who was the prime mover in sports and whist drives, and presided at the concerts. «He told the interviewers: 'T suppose I will get three months in Australia for giving a false name." He reiterated his' story of rescue-work, and said that he ; was compelled for that; purpose to dress , .as . a. loafer, and frequent public-Louses. Miss Grimes was . the only woman who understood him. His deposit in .the Victorian Office represented his entire' savings. He was able to account for every penny. ''Miss. Grimes was reticent and depressed. Knighfs popularity collapsed. He spent the evening in • town, under the usual emigration permit, and left the quayside in a motor-car,' followed by the jeers of his fellow-passengers.
