CRICKET. RE.MODEL BASIN RESERVE. PLAYERS' OPINIONS. Tho executive of the Wellington Cricket Association met last night, and one of the matters which was discussed was tho proposed remodelling of the Basin Reserve, which is »t present UlO chief of the city cricket grounds. The oliuirmun of tho meeting (Mr. M. I. Luckie) introduced the subject. Mr. Luekip said that tho cil'ect of tho plan was lo throw tho whole ploying ground more to the west, aud substitute -a now pavilion for tho existing ono. At tho invitation of Mr. W. Morton (tho City Engineer) ho had had a look at tho plans, and from a cursory glance he was inclined to think that such alterations would bo ot great advantage to tho cricketers, provided thatthero would'bo room left for four cup witkets. Ho gathered from Mr. Morton that there would be plenty of room, lie understood, also, that by making alterations, tho space could be increased. Tho total area under tho new plan would be about i\ acres. Mr. I'. Midlane: Wnat is tho present aieai' .
Mr. Luckae: That is really difficulfto say. It is not much more than four acres, if it is that. There would not bo as much spaco inside the pathway, but something approaching it. Tho point is that it will bo made oval; it is now oblong, which lends itself better to getting four wickets. Mr. Midlane: Wo won't get four wickets on an oval. Mr. Luckie: We will got three, anyhow! Mr. J. !• (inning: Wo don't need four, do we? - iMr. Luckie stated that tho match wickets brought.tho association in .£l5O to ;C175 in tees'every year. If they only got three wickets on the now ground, this revenue would be reduced by- one-fourth. Mr. Fanning: If the proposal is car--ried we will get rid of the small boy nuisance. . Mr. Luckie: That is so. ■ There will be a ground for the small boys on the other side of the tram-line. : Mr. Midlane: It will mako it a moro attractive- ground to change it to .an oval. • '■".-.* ■' : ', ." v Mr.C G. Wilson: It might bo a means of getting a better pavilion, too. : Mr. Midlane: I think that. If they don't cut into tho ground too much it Is a good idea,. .;-.. '"Mr. Luckie:. lam 6tiro' of it. '. . . I don't think they can■• do this, without legislating. . Messrs. C. G. Wilson, F. Laws, M.' F. Crombie, and M. Luckio- wore appointed a sub-committee to go into the whole'inatter .with tho city. engineer. ' Mr.. Wilson said Hint the area, according to the new plan, would be 433 feet by 532 feet. "Well," h.9 remarked, "it would make a very nice ground for one match. You won't get four grounds. There' 19 one grand thing—you'will get rid'of the 'children, nnd Jhut will 'allow you to have the ground a little more privito than it is now." j ■ Mr. Midlane: Another' thing is that if you-have- a nice ground you will got niaro people to come and see the mutches. Mr. Fanning then moved that Messrs. C. G. Wilson, M. F. Crombie, F. Laws, and E., B. Vuuce should be a sub-com-mitteo to mako inquiries with a view to tho association's obtaining more control of the proposed new Basin. .; Mr. Wilson said that the association should havo a tablo of information showing how much money the cricketers had spent on the Basin. Mr. Lufckie: Si 11 co 1882 we have spent between .£7OOO and .£IO,OOO. : ' ', Mr. Wilson remarked that it was Useless making that statement'in a'general way. They needed the full information in black and- white with which, to confront anyone who asked: "What • has cricket done for the ground?"- ' _ . It was decided tliat this information should be got out as suggested by Mr, Wilson, and that Mr. Tanning's 'mob'on should'stand over meantime. .' '■■'.''' '■ '"'HAWKE'S BAY MATCH; ' ''f H ."At the meeting of the committee of the Wellington Cricket -, Association' last evening Hawkb's Bay inquired by letter if Wellingtoh'Wuld play them at Napier : on'M(ircu'ls;and 17, instead of a week later/ wlion Hawke's Bay wish ta play Auckland. ,' ' ■ ■ •. >■ ' ; •■■ :' •. In view of the probability of a matoh betwecu Christchurch and Wellington it was decided that a definite answer could not bo sent to Hawko's Bay immediately, but that Hawke's Bay should be advised to make a certainty of the . Auckland match in the menntimo. •_ A sub-committee was set up to inquire whether a team could be got together, to go to Napier at their own expense. BOWLS. j ■ .'■,.
