WAIMATE FROM MONTREAL. An arrival in port from Montreal, via way ports, yesterday afternoon was the New Zealand Shipping Company's Waimate. Tho Waimate left Montreal on Novombcr 26, arrived at Capo Town on December 26, and Melbourne on January 20. Her voyage was uneventful, and with tho exception of a heavy galo which was encountered while crossing tho Southern Ocean, lasting for two days, moderate to flno weather was met with. Captain A. H. Zealandic, will succeed Captain Kempson, who is leaving R.M.S. Athenic on arrival at London to take up an important shore position. The Tyser liner Makarini is due in port from Wanganui this evening. Departure will bo taken for London at daybreak on Saturday, February, 22. The now Union, collier being built at Home has been named Kamo. She is of 1300 tons gross, and will bo employed in the coastal trade. Lyttelton has been selected as the station for the old barque Helen Denny, which is being converted into a coal hulk by the Paparoa Coal Company. From Wanganui the Moa returns to Westport to load coal for Waitara. : The A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Buteshire, which left Wellington for tho south yesterday, is duo .back here next week to load on behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Co; for London. 'It is expected that the Nora Niven and Waimea will bo ready to come off the Wellington Patent Slip either to-morrow or Friday. The Kahu will be tho next vessel to.occupy the cradle. She will bo followed by the Tutanekai. Rain delayed the steamer Haupiri in discharge of her cargo at New Plymouth yesterday. Tho vessel is expected at Wellington' to-day, howevor, to load for Picton, Nolson; and Onehunga. Continuing her journey from Greymouth tho Arahura arrived attyestport at 5 a.m. yesterday, and left for Nelson, Picton,'and Wellington at 5 p.m. Sho is due in port about 9.30 p.m. to-day. ' Bad weather was responsible for delaying the Waipori at Westport 3'cstcrday morning: It was hoped, however, .to get the vessel, away for Wellington at 8 p.m. It will be early next week before the Union Company's turret steamer Koromiko loaves Wellington for Westport. ASTRONOMICAL. CHRONOMETER RATING NOTICE. Hector Observatory,, Wellington.— The position of tho Hector Observatory is as follows:— "Latitude, 41dcg. 17min. 3.765e0. South. Height, above 1909 mean E«a love], 418 feet, ', -Chronometer Eating Notice.—At 1 p.m. to-day a galvanometer rignal for rating chronometers, willlbe sent from the Observatory to tho Public Telegraph Office and to the Dominion Museum. The needlo will move at'l p.m. exactly of Now Zealand standard mean time, when a'chronometer sot to Greenwich mean tlmo should Bhow'l3 hours"3oiniri. Any difference will bo the error of the chronometer on Greenwich mean time. ■' At 9 p.m. correct'time wil! also be Bignailed from tho Observatory by meanß of electric lights. A green light will be switohed on at about 8.45 p.m., a red one at about 8.55 p.m., and a white one at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will be switched off at 9 p.m. exactly of Now Zealand standard mean time. The preparatory switching on of the lights must be considered as only approximately correot,. and must not bo used for rating chronometers.
