Tho Fire Brigades' Annual Conferenc* commenced'here to-day, about 500 delegates being present, Superintendent Leaver, of Westport, presiding. The president, in his address, made a feeling reference, to the death of Past President and Secretary Gilberd, and Past President Mitchell. .. A resolution of admiration at the heroism of the Antarctic victims and condolence with the relatives was 1 passed. Votes of sympathy were also passed to the relatives of Past Presidents Gilberd and Mitchell. . . iThe executive's Toport stated that matters in connection with the association were in a satisfactory condition. Tho amount of assets over liabilities is £Gi3 10s. Cd. The number of brigades,on the roll is 12C. The accident insmanco branch revenue amounted to i£32o 155., and the expenditure, which included a death claim, wos .£193 3s. 3d.,' leaving a proEt of .£127 Us. 9d. -
A committee consisting of Captains Glenny, M'Aneny, Socwra,. Beveridge, llcan.Rolston, Nuttall, Lieut. Jones, and Fireman Williams, was set up to go into tho question of establishing a benevolent fund in connection with' tho association. A number of remits were carried bearing on comuctition conditions. In the rowing match between Gisborne and Wanganui Fire Brigade Fours, Gisborne won after an exciting race by ncarly threo lengths. To-night the. firemen formed a torchlight procession, and, with two bands and decorated engines mid reels, paraded the streets. There was an immense orowd, and tram traffic was stopped for an hour. The conference resumes to-morrow.
