THE CLYDESDALE HORSE.
A YEAR OF. PROGRESS. The year 1912 was, 5 so far'as tiie'Cly'dcsdale broed is concerned, pno of progress on every liand. The value of the type has been enhanced considerably,, the: export trade with Canada, the United Slates, and other countrios has kept well up, and breeders are paying more attention than oser' to the proper registration of 'their slpok in the' Stud Book. So says a writer in the "Live Stock Journal Almanac" for .1013. Breeders, however, are not in every case in agreement asto what constitutes an ideal Clydesdale, but the majority appear to favour a horse which, given plenty of bono without grossness, and with comparative freedom Of action, ia fitted to do o' heavy day's lorry work and keep fit.' The' "tall" horse with fine bones finds favour with a-few, but the number "Who place their faitli iii this typo is becoming gradually less. It is recognised that those who want a horse for heavy work are hot likely to purchase ono of tho latter kind, whilst ■there are plenty of the former to be had, ■and in the'end it is the price, that rules the type, and of course the price will enly. be given for the sort that has been proved, to'be suitable for the work required. The Canadian, tho New Zealander, and other foreign buyers' 'want a certain class of horse, and they know that it can bo got if they go'.the right way about it. Prices obtained during tho year have been. excellent, and breeding mares were never dearer than at prscnt.
