THE KING'S HONOURS.
A PLEA FOR EDUCATIONISTS. . Before the Inspectors' Conference concluded its business on Saturday evening Inst it was moved— "That the conference record its high ' appreciation of the distinguished .sc-r- A vices to tho cause of education by Mr. 9' Pctrie, late Chief Inspector of Auck- M land, and Mr. Goycn, late Chief In- . 01 6peetor of Otago, and trusts that they "J may long live to enjoy the honourable a repese to which they are so justly en- 9' titled." . . ' ■ ii Mr. F. H. Bakewcll (Wellington), in proposing tho motion, said that it was not „ ( his intention at that late hour of tho w night to onlarge on the great work done p in tho field of education by these men, £, whose conspicuous abilities and brilliant records had mado their names household 6( words from one end of the Dominion to y the other. What ho did wish to say was c ] this: that while tho work of men in other branches of the public service was so lib- p, .ernlly acknowledged by award of those j, honourable distinctions with which it was customary to, show appreciation of ;, devotion to duty and eminent service to u tho State, the men who laboured in the cause of education were persistently passed over. Though the Importance of edu- f cation to the very life itself of the nation b was so universally admitted, year by year n the most distinguished men in the „ sion were allowed to retire from active t service without recognition of the grent i debt which tho country owed them. It t was-with this view that, with the permis- T sion of tho conference, he would add to c his original motion the following:— " E "And the conference can only ex- \ press regret that in the distribution of I honours so freely bestowed on other branches of the publio service, no re- t cognition appears to be made of the 1 fact that men who have devoted their . 1 lives to the discharge, of the highest 1 duty, and tho noblest function of the < State, have also deserved well of their ] • country." ■ ' • • ' ' The motion with this addition was car- ■', ried by acclamation, , .
